Shri Khatu Shyam Baba in Rajasthan

Barbarika alias Khatu Shyamji or Shyam Baba was a grandson of the brave prince, Bhima, second of the Pandava brothers. He was the son of Ghatotkacha, sired by Bhima through one of his wives, Jagadamba. Even in his childhood, Barbarika was a very courageous warrior. t is a pilgrimage site for worshipping the deity Krishna and Barbarika who is often venerated as a Kuladevata. Devotees believe the temple houses the head of Barbarika or Khatu Shyam, a legendary warrior who sacrifices his head upon the request of Krishna during the antebellum of the Kurukshetra War. Originally the temple was built 975 years ago by Smt. Narmada Kanwar and her husband Shri Roop Singh Chauhan. In Samvat 1777 (1720 A.D.), Diwan Abhaisingh at the behest of the then king of Jodhpur, renovated the old temple. Barbarika, being a true warrior and disciple of Lord Krishna, readily agreed and severed his own head.

Bheem then took the head of the greatest Kshatriya and placed it on the top of a hill as promised. Ghatotkach was married to Maurvi or Ahilawati who was the daughter of Bashak snake who stays around the neck of lord Shiva. Ghatotkach and Maurvi had a son named Barbareek. Khatu Shyamji is known as manifestation of Bhim and Hidimba's grandson. Except the some designated days, this temple has less footfall. The devotees of lord Khatu Shyam love to say" Hare Ka Sahara Shyam Baba Hamara",this can be roughly translated as "when no one is your side Lord KhatuShyam is with you."

Khatu Shyam Ji Mandir is located in the district of Sikar, Rajasthan, and is considered as one of the most important pilgrim destinations in the state. According to Hindu mythology, Khatu Shyam Ji is the manifestation of the son of Ghatotkacha, Barbarika. The head was later found buried at the Khatu village in the Sikar district of Rajasthan. It was discovered when a cow started giving milk on top of this head. It was handed over to a Brahmin who worshipped it and meditated on it to reveal the story. In Rajasthan, Barbarika is worshipped as Khatu Shyam in Khatu Shyam Temple, and in Gujarat, he is worshipped as Baliyadev and is believed to have been sacrificed before the Mahabharata war to ensure the victory of his grandfathers, the Pandavas. In return for his sacrifice, he was deified by Krishna.
