Shri Hanuman and Shri Shani Dev

Shri Shani Dev and Hanuman are mostly equally powerful… But, Shani and Hanuman never compared themselves.. Once in the history, Shani and Hanuman fights… Shani knows that Hanuman is the avatar of lord Shiva… so Shani never hurts Hanuman. But literally too, Hanuman gets more powerful than Shani. Shani bows to Hanuman according to two different stories. In one, Hanuman saved Shani from the clutches of Ravan, and Shani promised Hanuman he would not bother Hanuman’s devotees. In the other, Shani tried to burden Hanuman by sitting on his shoulders. Hanuman increased his size until Shani was caught between him and the ceiling of the room and it hurt. Then he promised Hanuman that he would never bother his devotees.

So, Hanuman has the upper hand over Shani. Also, Shani’s father, Surya (Sun) was Hanuman’s guru, so that probably gives Hanuman the upper hand as well, some relationship at least. In childhood time both are a friend but because of a curse to Lord Shani forget all about friendship. Once a time, Lord Hanuman was busy in worshipping to Lord Ram then Shani Dev comes to Lord Hanuman and as his nature, he began trying to create some obstacles in it. But after this Lord Hanuman warned him but he doesn't understand.

Then Hanumanji holds him in his tail and he continued his worship and later he starts jumping here and there and while this Shani dev is not able to protect against him and got injured badly. Sometimes later Hanuman released him then Lord Shani Dev promised to him that he never create obstacles in his Worship or any work and lord Shani dev gives blessings to Lord Hanuman. Lord Shani seek some oil to Lord Hanuman and he said could put on scars for recovering me then Lord Hanuman provides him. After this Shani Dev was very happy and promised to the universe that if any devotee would present oil on me then his wishes come true.

Father of Shani Dev, Suryadev, is the teacher of Lord Hanuman. Shani Dev has a fight with his own father, but Suryadev has given a lot of his powers to Lord Hanuman and made him Mahavir. Shani Dev is considered to be of cruel and unforgiving nature, while Lord Hanuman like Lord Shiva is extremely forgiving. Shani Dev is born from fire, while Lord Hanuman from air (Pavan putra).It is believed that one should not sell oil on Saturdays; however, offering oil to Lord Hanuman on the same day is considered auspicious.

Shani Dev or Saturn was kept as a prisoner with Ravan in Ramayana. A rishi had told Raavan that the planets in his horoscope are moving in a way that aren't a good indicator. The rishi especially mentioned that Shani in Ravan's horoscope was creating a havoc and would be a result of his destruction. Ravan being an egoistic and merciless king, told the rishi that no one had an audacity to create havoc in his life. Ravan told the rishi that even Yam (the Death God) surrendered to him.

As far as Shani was concerned, Ravan went to his house and fought with him. Then, he captured Shani dev and held him as his prisoner. For this, all Devta, Gods, demi-Gods, serpents and eunuchs laughed at Ravan's idiotic action because he had brought Shani in his own house himself. Devatas even said that no one could save Ravan because Shani's evil eyes would constantly remain on him henceforth.

This incident is seen as a part of Sunderkand in Ramayana. After Hanuman ji sets ablaze Lanka, he bows to his father, Wind God (Pawan Dev) and seeks permission to go to Lord Ram so that he could inform him about Mata Sita's whereabouts. Pawan Dev tells Hanuman ji that before he goes, he has another important task to perform in Lanka. Hanuman ji asks what the task is, to which Pawan Dev tells him that Ravan has captured Shani Dev since long and he needed to be released from his claws. Pawan Dev tells Hanuman ji that no one else can do this task.

Following the orders, Hanuman ji goes to the place where Shani Dev is held captive. He releases Shani Dev and bows with folded hands. Shani Dev says that he is very happy with Hanuman and tells him to ask for anything he wants. Hanuman ji asks for nothing, but a fast union of his Lord Rama and Mata Janaki. Shani Dev tells Hanuman ji that this is not just Hanuman's wish, but the desire of entire universe. After all this, Shani Dev tells Hanuman ji that because he helped him from merciless and egoistic Ravan's claws, therefore he would always be called Sankatmochan. Further, Shani Dev tells Hanuman ji that whoever chants Hanuman's name will remain safe from the wrath of Shani. Shani will remain calm on Hanuman's devotees always.

It is for this reason that whoever is having Shani Mahadasha or Saadhe-Saati (popular in Hindu astronomy), is told to pray to Lord Hanuman. Whoever bows and surrenders to Hanuman ji is never defeated and gets a faster redressal to Shani's wrath. Hanuman had rescued Shani Dev from Ravan when he went to Lanka looking for Sita. Shani Dev promised Hanuman that his devotees would be spared from the Shani’s malefic effects. Hence, prayers to Hanuman are considered a remedy for a bad Shani in ones Kundali. Jay Shri Hanuman Ji Ki, Jay Shri Shani Dev Ki
