Shred Your Resume: Your Brand is What Matters Now

I know, that sounds like such a millennial thing to say.?

But, it’s true.?

Gone are the days when a perfect resume will give you the job of your dreams. People are changing how they work and with whom they choose to work. And you should be pretty excited about this! It means that you have more control than ever over your future, your network, your hire-ability, and your influence.?

I’m a pharmacist by training. When I think about all the jobs I’ve ever applied to with that 1-2 page black & white professional document I know I didn’t stand out from the crowd of other eager pharmacists. We all have the same general work history, exemplary performance, and non-humanness on paper. When everyone is qualified for the job, who wins? Is it:

  • The person who will work for the least money??
  • The person who has the most letters after their name??
  • The person who is subconsciously the most similar to the hiring staff?
  • The most persistent applicant?
  • The one with a unique, very professional; an engaging, yet solemn piece of paper?
  • A random draw from the pile?
  • Or did anyone see the resume after it was sent into the black hole?

“It’s time to base hiring decisions less on credentials and more on the motivation and ability to collaborate and learn.” -Adam Grant

Thank goodness that the world is changing and we get to create our own brand and stand out from the crowd in a way that is authentically us. It is a wonderful time to be alive and owning a unique space in the world! This fact of self-branding shouldn’t drive a stake of fear into our hearts, but make us jump for joy!

The old guard kind of hates this change coming. They like the old way of credentials being king. To me, competence & passion > credentials. Instead of telling me what you can learn (credentials), show me what you can do (competence).?

You get to be unabashedly you and show up to the world with how you bring together your unique skills, talents, and ambitions. Someone out there is looking for you….but they can’t find you if you haven’t created a presence online. We live in a noisy, busy world. We could scroll through different social media platforms 24/7 and never see the same content twice. It can feel daunting to stand out from the crowd, but it is imperative you do. Your future depends on it! Forbes agrees with me!

I’m particularly interested in teaching my fellow healthcare professionals to stand up and stand out in their own space. Everyone in healthcare has the brains to do something big, but have many have the savvy??

My goal for this newsletter is to teach (healthcare professionals, in particular) how to:

  • Stand up
  • Stand out
  • Evolve personally & professionally to the changing times
  • Effectively network
  • Create your own brand
  • Feel bright & optimistic about their future
  • Succeed as entrepreneurs
  • Be brave & bold
  • Share insight into the latest trends/resources to make your life easier
  • Etc. & etc!

I’m excited to teach you all I know and learn along the way to help you create the future you want for yourself & those you love.?

This is my first newsletter, and I’m excited to be a beginner in this space. Let’s grow together, shall we?

Jamie
