Shravan, also known as Sawan, Shravana mass, or Soroban (in the East India) is the auspicious month that falls during the monsoon season. It begins on the new moon day of the 5th month of the Hindu lunar calendar. It begins in late July from the first day of the full moon and ends on the day of the next full moon. The month of Shravana celebrates the arrival of the South-West monsoons. In the Hindu calendar, throughout the month, devotees pay homage to Lord Shiva by worshipping him, observing fast, visiting temples, reading scriptures, singing Bhajans, and chanting or reciting shlokas dedicated to Shiva. Shravan month derives its name from Shravana Nakshatra which coincides with the full moon day of this month. Mondays falling in Shravan month referred to as Shravan Somvar is highly auspicious as both the month and day are dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Most of the devotees observe Vrat and perform Shiva Abhishek during this month. A strict vegetarian diet is followed by many people throughout the month especially in the western states of India. The cosmos during this time is believed to be charged with Shiva principles so pujas performed, and spiritual practices done during this month helps attract divine grace. Worshipping Lord Shiva is believed to bestow good health, spiritual growth, harmony, bliss, and fulfill desires. Vrats performed during the month of Shravan: Since the various conduct prescribed by Vedas is very difficult for a common man to perform, Puranas prescribe special Vrats that can be performed during the month of Shravan.
Shravan Somvar Vrat: It is observed on Monday of Shravan month and should be continuously observed for five Mondays. Devotees can either consume water throughout the day or consume food after sunset. Rituals like Shivling Abhishek, temple visit and mantra chanting is done on this day. This Vrat helps one connect with the divinity of Lord Shiva.
Manglagour Vrat: In Maharashtra this puja is performed by newlywed women on every Tuesday, this Vrat attracts blessings of Lord Shiva’s consort Mata Parvati and Their son, Lord Ganesh. It bestows longevity to the husband and brings marital harmony.
Shravan Shukravar: Also known as Jivanti pujan in Maharashtra, this fast is observed on first Friday of Shravan. This Vrat is done for the protection and longevity of children.
