18 Characteristics of Startup Success -- Showt Scores 17.5 out of 18
A favorite topic for industry thought leaders to expound on -- and for hundreds of millions of Shark Tank swimmer wannabes to hyperventilate about -- is what makes for successful startups and whether their startup has “it” or not.
When we started Showt it wasn’t our first startup, and we were familiar with the works of the best thought leaders in the field, including Jack Trout, Al Ries, Steve Jobs, Paul Graham, Salim Ismail, Peter Diamandis, Steve Jurvetson, John Doerr, Reid Hoffman, Mark Cuban, Peter Thiel, and Seth Godin.
Different experts will emphasize different things, of course, but there are certain items that make most of the lists. We hereby submit our summary of the best of these lists.
We Showt staff, management, investors are optimistic about Showt’s ultimate success because we believe Showt ticks 18 of the 18 boxes (still working on box 2, but feel confident we can tick that box soon).
In addition, we’re optimistic that two important conditions for Showt’s global success are going our way: (a) rapid growth in digital advertising and (b) mobile phone use continuing to grow (in the developing world), reaching near ubiquity soon.
Therefore, we predict that 2023 will be the Year of Showt, as
-- 1995 was the Year of Netscape
-- 1996 was the Year of Yahoo!
-- 2000 was the Year of Google?
-- 2005 was the Year of Facebook
-- 2006 was the Year of YouTube
-- 2010 was the Year of Twitter
-- 2011 was the Year of Instagram
-- 2013 was the Year of WhatsApp
-- 2015 was the Year of Snapchat
-- 2019 was the Year of TikTok
-- 2022 was the Year of ChatGPT
Startup success characteristics (in random order)
1. Can it generate revenue?
Let’s start with the climax: Showt will be the most productive, direct, efficient, engaging, responsive, and inclusive advertising platform in history. Who needs cookies, when you have ShowtAds, ShowtCounts, and ShowtBacks?
Every time someone Showts, they are shouting to the world (anonymously or with their identity attached, as per their choice), revealing something emotionally rooted in their psyche. No one Showts out of apathy. They Showt because they care, and for every Showt there’s an advertiser and Showtee that will cherish that Showt (if they know what’s good for them) and try to take advantage of it to strengthen their brand, or to reduce damage.
Here’s the thrilling part: this emotion/preference might be something that the Showter has never revealed before; it will be Showt that draws the curtain so the world of advertisers can discover this emotion/preference and act.
When Showt is in full operation all over the world, billions of people will Showt about tens of thousands of Showtees (public figures, products, places, issues, companies, organizations, sports teams) 24/7, with those Showtees responding immediately via their ShowtBack.
Social media pales in comparison to Showt. Social media is for fans of a personality or brand. A leading personality or brand will have millions or tens of millions of followers on social media, but three or four billion potential Showters know who they are, and can instantly Showt about them. Therefore, the scale of Showting is one or two orders of magnitude greater than social media.
Showt Yes/No for ABCD car brand. ABCD will send that Showter a ShowtBack to show them they are listening and care what the consumer thinks, and ABCD (and all its competitors) will bid to reach out to that Showter and show them an advertisement. (“We at {ABCD competitor} are proud that our Customer Care has been rated #1 six years running. Click here to find out more.”)
Every advertiser will be clamoring to get a prime seat on board the Showt train.
The great thing about the 2023 timing of Showt’s Launch: nearly every Showtee (entertainer, politician, athlete, sports team, brand, political party) already has an experienced social media management team working on their FB, Twitter, Snap, Insta, TikTok, and email newsletters.
Getting those teams to spend an extra few minutes every 12 hours or 24 hours to devise a daily compelling No and Yes ShowtBack completely appropriate for that 12- or 24-hour period will be easy.?
Imagine if we started Showt in 2010 when social media was undeveloped and there was no such profession as a Social Media Manager: to convince a Showtee to hire someone especially to spend a few minutes a day to ghost-write and manage their ShowtBacks and ShowtAds would have been expensive.
“The advertising potential for Showting is far greater than a company bidding for the opportunity to display an ad when someone Showts No for their competitor. The full potential is with billions of consumer revealing their previously hidden preferences.”? ---T.S. RAMAKRISHNAN (VP of Product Engineering at Facebook, and AdMob, the pioneering mobile advertising platform (acquired by Google)
2. Do you have enough resources to bring it to the world?
In our Plan A (ended 2022) we devoted our funds to our design, research, coding, testing, and biz dev, and nothing for marketing (buying media to get Showt widgets in front of the world).
We planned to fund our big (Critical Mass) media launch by convincing XYZ sponsors/advertisers to pay for wide media placement of XYZ Showt widgets to give XYZ unparalleled information about how consumers felt about them, and -- oh, yeah, coincidentally -- teach the country/world to Showt.?
The impact we got with Plan A -- getting advertisers to fund the campaigns -- was too small to reach the required critical mass of Showting and awareness.
Ping me to hear about Plan B. The future is bright!
3. Do you have a devoted, passionate, talented team with broad, diverse, and complementary skills to take on the world?
Showt has a devoted, passionate talented, world-class team with global experience at the highest levels of technology, business, and advertising. We are also incredibly persistent, knowing that we will succeed in 2023.

“Democracy is not merely a form of Government. It is essentially an attitude of respect and reverence towards our fellow humans” ---BHIMRAO RAMJI AMBEDKAR (father of the Indian constitution)
4. Is it different? Have you thoroughly researched and scanned the world to find similar enterprises?
Yes and yes.
All the millions of polls since modern polling began 199 years ago have been controlled by the elites in media, business, and politics.
No criticism here of polls; polls are a wonderful tool. If you want to find out what the public thinks about XYZ, you ask 500 to 1,000 people at random, even in a massive country like India with 1.4 billion citizens. If you are paying for a statistically accurate survey, and 1,000 is enough to survey, and asking 2,000 gives you no more accuracy, then why ask 2,000 or 200,000?
We started Showt to do something as powerful as a standard poll, but much much more. We aim to give everyone in the world a chance to quickly, easily, and anonymously have their say about nearly anyone or anything at any time and be heard, counted, replied to, and remembered for posterity, regardless of their gender, age, religion, nationality, language, literacy, or income level. Our goal is revolutionary but simple in execution.
Imagine what we can deliver; the 99.9999% -- a 16-year-old in rural India who only speaks Hindi, or a 70-year-old retired school teacher in Rio de Janeiro who only speaks Portuguese -- to have the same power to be heard and counted as the elite, the .00001% -- the Elon Musks and the Beyonces.
We reverse-engineered the entire platform to achieve our revolutionary goal, and what we came up with was diametrically opposed to standard polls.?
There is nothing like Showt, Showting, and ShowtCounts.
There is nothing like ShowtBacks.
There is nothing like ShowtAds.
When we do it right, there will be no room for copycat, ersatz Showts, Showting, ShowtCounts, ShowtBacks, and ShowtAds in the newly created Showt Instant Global Voting world.
“All people deserve to have a voice and be treated with respect no matter who they are.” ---JAMES BLINKEN
5. If it’s a category that doesn’t exist yet, will people -- post-launch -- affirm the viability of the business model by saying “That’s obvious” and “Why didn’t someone think of this before?”
Yes, we are confident that when three-four billion people see the 250x300 Showt widget in their news stories and their OTT platforms and read about the enormous global ShowtCounts for important global events, they will say “Why didn’t anyone think of this before?” and “I’m happy to have a chance to express myself instead of just yelling at my computer screen!”?
Everyone has an opinion, -- but ALSO EVERYBODY IS BUSY -- and if it takes two seconds to express that opinion, and it costs nothing, and the Showter knows they will be heard, counted, remembered, replied to, and reported on, THEY WILL TAKE THOSE TWO SECONDS, and feel a kind of pride and joy in being heard globally.
When they start to see ShowtBacks coming from the Showtees, they will be delighted that a Showtee is taking the time to reply to them, even when they have Showted No.
A new age of active engagement for the people of the world -- the 99.999% -- with the elite -- the 0.0001% -- will quickly emerge. Brands (and that includes politicians, sports teams, athletes, and entertainers) know the restrictions and limitations of current social media platforms, where the average person has to:
-- follow a brand on the social media platform
-- wait until the brand posts on that social media platform
-- rates that post with like or some other emoticon (no dislike is possible) or can write a comment (all with no anonymity possible)
“How dare you settle for less when the world has made it so easy for you {SHOWTERS} to be great.” ---SETH GODIN
6. Does it solve an important problem for a lot of consumers?
Homo sapiens are social beings. We all want to express ourselves and interact with our peers, our compatriots, and the world. We want to be heard. BUT WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT QUICKLY AND EASILY. UNTIL SHOWT.
The stats are stark: 99.999% of the world’s population have never heard about anything, except if they live in a democracy and they vote every four or five years.?
In May 2019, the largest election in world history, the Indian national election was held. 611 million citizens voted, 67% of the 912 million eligible. The ruling party, Bharatiya Janata Party, won handily with 229 million votes, or 37% of the total of voters. So in a country of 1.4 billion people, the ruling party won overwhelmingly with only 17% of the total population voting for them.
With Showt, the entire adult population of India with an internet device (900+ million and growing) can vote/Showt for anyone or anything at any time, minute by minute. They don’t have to wait. Their Showt will be heard immediately throughout all of India and the wor
Modern internet technology allows people all over the world to express themselves, but current technology -- social media -- is deficient in many ways that constrain free expression for the masses.
Most importantly, there is a lack of anonymity, so free expression can be dangerous, particularly in the many countries with authoritarian governments or social tensions that can lead to violence.
Despite the enormous success of current social media platforms, they mirror the incumbent power structure. The 0.0001% who could easily harness traditional old-school media (the top entertainers, politicians, athletes, business people, brands, political parties) back in the day retain and monopolize all the power they had before.?
Showt has been reverse-engineered to counter all the deficiencies of the current dominant social media platforms.?
“The media has a lot of power that they can use to keep democracy alive but unfortunately, I see a lot of media working just the other way. We must start using the power of media in the positive direction.” —FOUNDER AND CEO OF A LEADING NEWSGROUP IN ASIA
7. Is it scalable across all age groups?
10-year-olds have opinions. 90-year-olds have opinions. Showt is easy for both these groups and everybody in between.?
A high level of literacy skills, the ability to be clever and sophisticated, and caution about how you will be punished for your free expression are NOT worries for Showters.
That’s why Showt is truly the platform for the 99.999% who are never heard -- except, perhaps, on election day.?
“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do.” —HELEN KELLER
8. Is it scalable across many geographies and cultures?
By limiting Showting to only Yes and No, we have distilled the most elemental form of communication, one that transcends all cultures. All cultures have a basic expression of positive and negative views.?
“That government is the strongest of which every man feels himself a part." —THOMAS JEFFERSON
9. Is it patentable?
Patent pending. We have applied for a broad range of patents in the United States, Europe, and India.
10. Is it part of a trend that will last, and not a fad that will fade?
We can say with confidence that the trend toward universal ownership of handheld digital devices (mobile phones) will continue.
97% of the world’s current population is within range of a mobile phone tower, and that percentage will only grow larger. The price of these devices is only getting smaller, the power of these devices is only increasing, the speed of connectivity is only increasing, and the price of this connectivity is only decreasing.?
The time is perfectly suited for a global multilingual platform that gives every one of these digital device owners a chance to quickly, easily, and anonymously express themselves and be instantly heard, counted, reported on, replied to, and remembered.?
“The fact that a man is to vote forces him to think. You may preach to a congregation by the year and not affect its thought because it is not called upon for definite action. But throw your subject into a campaign and it becomes a challenge.” — JOHN JAY CHAPMAN (American essayist, political reformer 1862-1933)?
11. Is it defensible? Will copycats be launched and crush you? Can you make a monopoly out of it to defend yourself? The internet giants (Meta, Google, Twitter, Microsoft, Oracle, Snap, RelianceJio) have enormous resources and a user base. Are you worried about them?
We plan to launch nationwide in India, the largest democracy and consumer market in the world, and focus first on categories that especially animate national interest and emotions in India: cricket and entertainment. With this strategy, we plan to make Showt, Showting, and the world’s first Instant Global Platform an integral part of national discourse in India, for young and old, in every state, and in every language. That’s 1/6th of the entire planet.
If someone attempts a copycat platform, the consumers will immediately suspect a copycat, and wonder why they should “switch” from Showt, when Showt is free, fast, stable, ubiquitous, and fair. There will be no weak spot in the Showt armor.
We plan to expand outside India as soon as possible after our Indian launch, but in the meantime, we feel that our “monopoly” on the category we invented -- Instant Global Voting -- in India will give us enormous leverage with regard to potential competitors/copycats inside and outside India. At the end of the day, if you dominate in the largest consumer market in the world -- with 1/6th of the world’s consumers -- no copycat can claim a truly “global” position without India’s Showters.
We have studied and paid homage to the Ries and Trout Rule of failed brand extensions: big brands cannot extend their brand to incorporate an upstart platform. Facebook’s three abject and embarrassing failures to crush Snapchat is the classic example of Ries and Trout’s Law of Brand Extension Failure.
But it’s not just the embarrassing SnapChat debacle: there has NEVER been any example of internet giants copycatting upstart platforms and squashing them. YouTube was crushing Google Video (remember that embarrassment for Google?), leaving Google to have to admit defeat and write a check for $1.6 billion (the 3rd best investment in Internet history -- FB buying Instagram and WhatsApp are #1 and #2).?
Facebook has failed every time in the copycat business. They had to buy Instagram. They had to buy WhatsApp. Does anyone remember their failed email service? Their failed Pinterest copycat? The list of failures goes on and on.?
When Showt is launched to India and the world, and everyone knows what Showting Instant Global Voting looks like (it will take 20 seconds to learn the protocol:?
….Showt will achieve global mindshare and monopoly for Instant Global Voting.
Look at the global success of TikTok. Who would have thought that a startup from China would be kicking Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Snapchat’s butt with a short-form video platform with brilliant algorithms? No amount of money paid to amateur video makers by the giants will dethrone TikTok.?
“That government is the strongest of which every man feels himself a part.” —THOMAS JEFFERSON
12. Is it simple and easy to use?
Showt’s simplicity and ease of use are obvious in any language or culture. The cheer or boo is the most elemental form of human communication, from the beginning of time.?
Throughout human history, heroes were greeted with cheers, the simple act of affirmation by a crowd for an individual or group of individuals. Of course, the same crowd always knew instinctively how to express their dissatisfaction -- variations of booing has always existed in every culture throughout history.
Showting is totally inclusive and welcoming to any user -- no training needed -- no matter how much an individual might struggle with literacy, or lack confidence in their ability to write.?
“Two cheers for democracy: one because it admits variety and two because it permits criticism."—E.M. FORSTER
13. Is it emotionally satisfying for consumers?
The masses -- the 99.999% of the world’s population that has NEVER BEEN LISTENED TO ABOUT ANYTHING -- will find it emotionally satisfying to see their ShowtCount quoted for posterity every day.?
HYPOTHETICAL NEWS STORY CARRIED IN THOUSANDS OF NEWS SITES AND NEWSPAPERS ALL OVER THE WORLD: “300 million Africans Showt “No” for Donald Trump in the 24 hours after it was revealed that he said, “All African countries are shitholes.”
“One billion people Showted for Ukrainian President Zelensky in the 24 hours after the Russian invasion. The country that had the most per capita Yes Showts was Poland. Zelensky’s Yes ShowtBack in 65 languages was a call to the people of the world to stand up for democracy and self-determination, and Zelensky’s links for action were clicked on 132 million times.”?
“I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but inform their discretion.” —THOMAS JEFFERSON
14. Is it something that the giants (Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon) will have to have as part of their platforms, and will bid for?
Yes.
“Only very slowly and late have men come to realize that unless freedom is universal it is only extended privilege.” --- CHRISTOPHER HILL (British historian)
15. Do you have a good name for your brand that is unique, global, short, trademarkable, appropriate, and smart?
We are proud and pleased with our name Showt. We were able to trademark our name and logo all over the world.
It’s (Shout) only five letters, and it’s one of those English words that is widely known in non-English speaking countries, like “love,” “rock n’ roll,” “hello,” “OK,” and “thanks”.?
The word even has two famous songs:?
For the purposes of the world’s first and only Instant Global Voting Platform “Shout/Showt” is a magical word that can go both ways: positive (cheering) and negative (booing). In our long list of name brainstorms, we listed Cheer/Boo, but that was terrible, and dropped from consideration.
Best of all, Shout/Showt is both a noun and a verb, just like Google and Zoom are both nouns and verbs. Facebook doesn’t have this flexibility. It’s just a noun. You “post on Facebook”. Twitter is even more confusing. Twitter is a noun, but definitely not a verb.
Sometimes people mispronounce Showt “Show-tee” primarily because of their familiarity with the cable channel Showtime. This works for us as well, kind of. “Show us your Showt” could be an alternative tagline.
However, after a few times hearing the ‘correct’ pronunciation -- like the English word ‘Shout’ -- we feel that most people will lose the “Show-tee” habit, and jump on board the “Shout” train.
“You can only protect your liberties in this world by protecting the other man’s freedom. You can only be free if I am free.” —CLARENCE DARROW
16. Is it making a positive contribution to the world so that the staff and customers feel like they’re making a positive difference in the world?
There will be a profound shift in planetary consciousness when all the people of the world experience the power of Showting on a minute-by-minute basis, about nearly anyone or anything, whenever they want to, and they will immediately get a ShowtBack in their native language from the Showtee they have Showted about, and they will immediately see that their Showt has been counted, reported on, and is part of the record of humankind in perpetuity.
A shopkeeper in Karachi Showts for Narendra Modi in Urdu-language on the day Mod is re-elected, and Modi immediately sends her a reply in Urdu. Showtastic!?
On February 24, 2022, billions of people will Showt Yes/No for Putin, and for Zellensky, and receive a ShowtBack from Zellensky in their native language.
The Showt team is sure that as people’s power to be heard increases, they will organically begin to study the news of their community, nation, and the world so that they can better Showt and be heard. Before, when they were silent, there was no reason to study the world situation, as no one would care about what they had to say about anything.
17. Will the startup be crippled because powerful forces (government, business, and/or religious) will object to it, resulting in the startup being banned or heavily restricted in important countries?
No.
Most Showting will be about mundane topics like entertainment, sport, products, and brands. These non-combustible topics will be seen as non-objectionable by the powers that be, and are unlikely to be banned, even in autocratic countries.?
