Reflecting on Men's Mental Health Month
As November draws to a close, we find ourselves at the end of Men’s Mental Health Month. We are in a period dedicated to illuminating the often-overlooked aspects of men's well-being.
FOr many, this month has been a time for introspection, challenging the traditional stoicism expected of men, and embracing vulnerability as a strength.
Reflecting on my own journey, I've confronted personal traumas, professional hurdles, and mental health struggles that compelled me to redefine masculinity.
These experiences have taught me the power of transparency and the necessity of brutal honesty—not just with others, but with myself.
My transformation has been gradual, requiring a daily commitment to show up intentionally, both for myself and for those around me.
In honor of Men’s Mental Health Month, I wanted to look at three actionable ways men can continue showing up, enhancing their mental well-being, and leading authentically: becoming better leaders, communicating more effectively, and managing stress and negative thoughts.
These are not mere ideals but practical strategies we can carry forward beyond November, beyond the 30 - 60 - 90 days. In fact to quote Buzz Lightyear "To infinity, and beyond".
It may read humorous, however, when the dust settles, all that's left is how a man shows up.
So...
Let's revisit and look at three ways men SHOULD show up in their relationship.
---
1. Be a Better Leader
Leadership transcends titles; it's about presence and influence. Whether in the workplace, at home, or within the community, the way we lead sets the tone for those around us.
Practical Steps to Better Leadership:
- Lead by Example: Actions speak louder than words. Embody the values you wish to see in others, such as resilience, compassion, and accountability.
- Prioritize Empathy: A leader who listens is a leader who learns. Understand the challenges faced by those you lead and offer support without judgment.
- Set Clear Goals: Aimlessness leads to stagnation. Define your purpose and communicate it clearly to inspire those around you.
For me, leadership means embodying the mental and emotional side of the LEAPLEY Factor: love, energy, audacity, proof, loyalty, excellence, and a yearning for the better. When others witness your commitment to these principles, they feel empowered to reach their own potential.

2. Communicate More Effectively
Effective communication is the cornerstone of all relationships, yet it's an area where many men struggle. Too often, we bottle things up, believing silence equates to strength.
However, silence breeds isolation, and connection begins with conversation.
Practical Steps to Better Communication:
- Practice Active Listening: Don't just hear — understand. Reflect on what someone shares to show you value their perspective.
- Be Vulnerable: Share your struggles and victories. Authenticity fosters trust and dismantles barriers.
- Use Clear and Concise Language: Avoid overcomplicating your message. Say what you mean and mean what you say.
Recently, I've emphasized the importance of transparent communication in my writing and coaching.
Whether crafting messages that resonate or engaging in difficult conversations with loved ones, the goal remains the same: clarity builds connection.

3. Manage Stress and Negative Thoughts
Mental clutter can weigh us down, affecting our ability to lead, connect, and thrive. Managing stress and reframing negative thoughts are vital skills for showing up fully.
Practical Steps to Manage Stress and Negative Thoughts:
- Establish a Daily Routine: Structure provides stability. Incorporate practices like journaling, exercise, or mindfulness into your day.

- Reframe Challenges as Opportunities: Instead of fixating on what's wrong, ask yourself, "What can I learn from this?"
- Build a Support System: Surround yourself with people who uplift you and hold you accountable. No one fights their battles alone.
For me, managing stress has meant prioritizing mental and physical health. It's why I'm passionate about writing and speaking on transformational topics.
In turning my struggles into stories, I have found a way to heal myself while helping others do the same.

Why Showing Up Matters
When men show up fully, authentically, and intentionally we create a ripple effect. Our families, teams, and communities grow stronger because they see what's possible when we embrace courage over complacency.
As Men’s Mental Health Month concludes, it's essential to remember that awareness is just the beginning. The real work lies in the daily commitment to these practices.
Start by being honest with yourself.
Where can you lead better?
Communicate more effectively?
Reduce stress?
These aren't one-time efforts but ongoing practices that build resilience and redefine masculinity.
My Perspective...
Reflecting on my journey, one truth stands out:
Showing up doesn't mean having it all together; it means being willing to try, fail, learn, and grow.
It's about living out the values we want to leave behind as our legacy. If we want to help others, we must first help ourselves—not from a place of selfishness but from a place of strength.
As we move beyond November, I challenge you to continue stepping into the arena.
Show up as a better leader, a clearer communicator, and a more resilient version of yourself.
You might discover that in showing up for others, you find the strength to show up for yourself.
Let's rewrite the narrative of what it means to be a man...
One intentional action at a time.
