Showing Up (In Life)

Something Silly

The winning dogs at the Westminster Dog Best In Show don't receive any money, and neither do their owners but that doesn't stop them from spending up to $250,000 a year to compete and show up.

Something Serious

Never underestimate the power of “Showing Up” especially now during these uncertain and uneasy times.

Remember the term “Executive Presence”?

  • "Executive Presence?is the ability to project confidence and gravitas (substance) under pressure." In addition a person with?executive presence?can present effectively and has the ability to 'read the room', so that they can influence an audience.

Before Covid, it was a very common topic of conversation for leaders. Now, not so much or should I say the foundation for the term itself has shifted quite a bit.

For starters, everyone who is working remotely is being asked to be (and remain) present – not just executives.

Sitting still all day (for many) on video conference calls can become tedious and feel like a never-ending game of “don’t blink first”.

Here some ways to show up when you are working remotely:

  • Commit to regular catch-up/communication with your managers, peers and direct reports. Set a time and stick to it.
  • Meet face-to-virtual-face whenever possible vs. turning off your camera. Seeing someone helps build and foster trust.
  • Dress the (whole) part. Meaning, don’t wear pajama bottoms off-screen but a nice shirt on. Complete the picture – it psychologically works.
  • Speak up during meetings. Literally and figuratively – this will ensure you are seen and heard.
  • Be proactive and ask others what they need. Don’t assume, you can’t read people’s minds so get in conversation vs. getting into trouble assuming.
  • Send your manager a weekly recap of your accomplishments.?Yes, toot your own horn, if he/she doesn’t like the music they will tell you.

Be Responsive. But don’t spread yourself thin. Remember, to set boundaries to ensure you are taking care of your wellbeing. There is no merit badge or gold star for answering emails at 2am.

A worthy article about the importance of showing up, including turning video on. Joshua Miller I also particularly appreciated the notion of being a part of the conversation rather than making assumptions, so easily done in our real and virtual worlds. You may be delighted to know I conducted several university lectures last year and requested ALL students 'show up' and be present. Each did. And in full attire, even though some were attending at 1.00am and 2.00am in the Middle East. They were grateful for the personal invitation to be 'present' with each other and have the intimacy of personal attention from the presenter. A memorable experience. Sometimes, all we need to do is 'invite presence', no matter where we are. Many are craving recognition and appreciation right now.
