Show Your Work!

Show Your Work! by Austin Kelon is definitely not your average book that you would read day to day. This book focuses on the process of what it takes to be you personal best when it comes to putting yourself and you work out for the world to see. I really enjoyed this reading and I specifically loved chapter three which is called “Think Process, Not Product”. This chapter stood out to me because of how Kelon explains that it is not always about the end result. Kelon put a quote in there by Michael Jackson saying, “A lot of people are so used to just seeing the outcome of work. They never see the side of the work you go through to produce the outcome” (pg 32). I absolutely love this quote and completely agree with how people never see the struggle of the product. All they care about is the outcome but the process is way more aplaudible. Throughout this chapter Kelon mentions how more important the process is and how we as artists, writers or entertainers need to take our audience through that journey so they can have a better appreciation for the final product. Before reading this book I always thought it was about the end result and it still is, but knowing about the process is was more fascinating and enlightening when we as an audience see a final product. Kelon states, “As in all kinds of work, there is a distinction between the painters process, and the products of her process”(pg 33) and I love this quote because of how vague it is but still makes so much sense when you think about it and I would love to know more about the process of final products rather than just seeing or hearing it.
