Show Us Your Good and Help Make a Difference
"We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give." This quote by Winston Churchill holds special significance as we strive to make a difference during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Altruism has taken on new meaning. Everyone is making sacrifices. Whether you are sheltering in place to flatten the curve, taking care of patients on the front lines, or providing essential services to those who need it most, we are all in this together. And people want to help.
Giving one's time, talents and treasures is a powerful way to find purpose, transcend difficulties, and gain fulfillment and connectivity. Whether we volunteer for organizations, offer emotional support to those around us or donate to charities, there is so much goodwill spreading all around us.
Scientific studies have shown the benefits that giving offers for the giver, boosting both physical and mental health. And researchers also found that people who gave their time to help others had greater self-esteem, less depression and lower stress levels than those who didn’t.
As far back as I can remember, I was raised to help others. From a young age, my parents instilled in me a commitment to volunteer service. They lived by the philosophy that living a meaningful life means using your resources to help others. Volunteering allowed me to make a difference in the community and to become a better version of myself.
