Show Me the Money!

Show Me the Money!

Let’s?examine in more depth the connection between your style as a leader and the outcomes that your organization can achieve. When you display open-mindedness, teachability, and low self-focus, you empower your top management teams to be better integrated. The executives in these teams will be more inclined to collaborate with each other, share information freely, make joint decisions, and agree on shared visions for the organization. This enables the organization to become more fluid in dealing with changes and to display a strategic orientation characterized by a double focus on exploration (thinking outside the box) and exploitation (improving efficiency and reliability). How does that influence the financial outcomes of the organization?

In one study conducted in the computer hardware and software industries, organizations driven by humble CEOs leading well-integrated, top management teams with strong strategic orientations had better financial performance than similar organizations led by non-humble CEOs. Specifically, humble leadership was associated with a significantly higher return on assets over a twelve-month period, which suggests that this style of leadership is not just a feel-good, mushy way of leading, but is rather a realistic approach that can improve important outcomes.

Humble leadership is clearly a humane way to lead and should be adopted by leaders because it is the right thing to do. But I am very relieved (as are the CFOs with whom I speak) that it not only makes us feel better, it also significantly contributes to the bottom line. Undoubtedly, humble leadership presents a competitive advantage, as it enables leaders, top managers, and employees to have a realistic view of themselves, their organizations, and their environments.
