Show the Children - Silver lining in every dark cloud

Last week I was away at Ahmedabad to meet my parents and since my 8-year-old had school I did not take him with me. As is the practice every night, I called him the night before I was to leave Ahmedabad and asked him how his day was and what he had planned for the next day. Instead of complaining about my absence, my son happily chirped, “Ma you will be back tomorrow, I’ll be able to tell you everything in person.” That is when it struck me, my child was looking at the positive side of things instead of being disheartened by the negatives.
His is a classic case of making lemonade when you get lemons.
How often do we as parents do that?
When exam schedules are announced, we complain about how the papers are spaced. When a circular about a school function is sent, we complain about how time is wasted in so-called ‘useless’ activities. When our child brings home his report card, we complain about how less he has scored in one subject without acknowledging how well he has done in another subject!!! Without realizing it, we are the reason why our children too start thinking negatively.
Look at the positive side of things, show your children the good in the bad, teach your child to look for the silver lining on a dark cloud, teach your children to be positive. See how much it changes them as a person, mark the change from negative to positive and disappointment to hopeful.
Try it to believe it!

5 年This should be the right approach. Cribbing about anything leads us to nowhere. Taking things positively can give us confidence to tackle things. Your daughter has understood and practises things which we are complaining about. Kudos to her, and to you for instilling this attitude.
I agree with you, Riddhi. We must keep striving to get the best even out of the worst. Children must be made to learn that what matters is not what happens to us but what actually happens in us. They must understand that anything negative happening to them will only make them realize their real potential and get stronger to face the challenges of life more comfortably. Thank you for initiating this issue to think over! ??

5 年Disagree: Look at the positive side of things, show your children the good in the bad. Bad is bad I would say make them learn about each experience.
