First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
— Martin Niem?ller, 1946
This was a speech given by an academic on a lecture tour following the Holocaust. I came across it at college, and it has shaped my approach to social justice ever since.

Our voices are powerful. Allyship means speaking out when it's hard, not when it's easy. For those that aren't aware, the war drums are well and truly pounding for the queer community. The roll-back on policies designed to protect our community signals a shift. It's easy to think "it's in America, it doesn't affect anything here". Except you use Amazon, don't you? Facebook? Instagram? Google? The list goes on. That's before we even think about politics. When America sneezes, the world catches a cold. And that cold denies our existence.
I know it's scary. It's easier to not think about it. But they will come for you too. Once they're done with trans folks, the gays will be next, then the women, then global majorities (in any order).
So now is the time to speak up. Now is the time to use your voice. The next time you can affect a decision at work, use it. The next time you see a petition, sign it. The next time you overhear a slur, call it out. We're relying on you.
In 20 years time, look back and be proud of what you did. Don't be the one that stays silent.
