Shoulder surfing, is a social engineering technique that involves physically looking over someone’s shoulder to steal confidential information, such as PINs, passwords, credit card numbers, and other sensitive data, ATMs, airports, and shopping malls are common places where shoulder surfers operate due to the abundance of individuals using their devices in public.
Visual shoulder surfing is the most frequent type, where the attacker observes the victim’s screen or keystrokes. Aural shoulder surfing involves listening to conversations to gather additional information, though it is less common.
Examples of shoulder surfing include:
Standing behind someone at an ATM and observing them enter their PIN code.
Sitting next to someone on an airplane and listening to their travel plans.
