Should Your Brand Delete Its Twitter Account?

Twitter is changing. A lot.

How will all of the up-in-the-air chips impact your social media presence and messaging strategy?

Allow it to serve as a reminder to not rely too heavily on any one platform because you never know what will happen. Refocusing your newsletter efforts, defining your content assets, backing up graphics and marketing materials and documenting collaborations in a safe place are good first steps in securing your status online.

Discuss the pros and cons of keeping your Twitter account active. Due to the speed of the recent developments and the ever-evolving nature of technology, it is possible that huge shifts that will swing the pendulum one way or the other are just around the corner. And it’s very difficult to define exactly what these will be.?

However, if you feel it’s vital to take a moral or ethical stance, you may decide to wave goodbye to the bird, even temporarily.?

Before you deactivate or delete your account, offer your Twitter followers another way to keep up with your company/business. Invite them to check out your brand on other social media platforms (after explaining what they will gain by doing so, of course).?

It can also be helpful to explain to your customers, clients or fans why you are making the decision you did. Write an on-brand message to share online—perhaps even pop-ups on certain web pages—in inboxes and maybe even in-office. Include links to your other platforms and contact information for follow-up questions.?

You can, and should, also begin exploring up-and-coming alternatives, even if you’re not planning on leaving Twitter. Being at the forefront of the newest one can give you an edge.

Be sure to update your social media buttons accordingly.
