Should you work with External Recruiters?

Have you ever worked with an external recruiter??

How has that experience been?

I know people either love or hate external recruiters… Understanding their role and expectations is therefore critical to working with them effectively!

A few things to know about external recruiters

1. Companies pay them so their loyalties lie with the companies. For most recruiters, the payment happens only after they successfully close the position.

2. There is no entry barrier to becoming a recruiter - some are in it to make quick bucks and some are looking at it for the long term. This can be seen in how they treat their candidates

3. Companies pay them 20-35% of your annual salary. The expectation then is that they match the exact requirement and not hire on “potential”

Looking at all these points, you may need to kiss many frogs to find the right recruiter. Someone who is looking at the career for a few years.

Why should you even work with a recruiter?

If you are a career changer, external recruiters are not for you!

But for everyone else, once you find 2-3 good recruiter partners, it can turbocharge your job search

- With one conversation, you have someone who is actively looking for roles for you

- Recruiters have access to confidential, senior and niche positions

- They are experts in their sectors and can provide you with invaluable market intel

?Ultimately, what’s the harm in working with them?

?

Okay, the last sentence is a bit nuanced because you need to know how to effectively work with them.

They are great partners if you know what boundaries to set or how to set them!
