Should you wear a mask or not?

I went out yesterday. It was a quick grocery run but it felt good to be out after a long time.

The lockdown had that effect on all of us I guess.

But as soon I went out, my happiness was ruined. Now that lockdown rules are relaxed, I could see more and more people out. It didn’t bother me much but I sensed a pattern. I realized that everywhere I go, I could see disposable masks just lying on the ground.

If you have gone out, I am sure you must have seen such masks lying around too. I get it, that masks are here to stay, just like the virus. But, masks are there to protect us. And,If more and more people used disposable masks, it could pose a serious threat to the entire humanity.

Most people are using home-made or reusable masks. But I could see that there is still a majority of people who use disposable masks. There are certain ways in which they could harm us all.

They are –

1)   Threat to us – It’s not a guarantee whether the mask thrown out was used by healthy person or not. If any of these disposed masks carried the virus, it could be the reason for the increase in the spread of the virus. A mask is a way to protect people, not to spread the virus even more. More and more people need to be made aware of the proper way to dispose the mask. A better and reusable alternative can be used. We all can urge each other to wear reusable masks. Corporates can even give their employees such masks. It will be a win for everyone.

2)   They are not good for the environment either – These masks are made of some plastic material. If they are not disposed properly, they could pose serious threat to all the wildlife and marine life in the longer run. It’s our right to save ourselves from the virus, but in the process, we should take care of the environment too. Stray dogs, cats, and cows could ingest them, leading to serious trouble. We can be a little more considerate for our environment, right?

We need to remember that we need to fight one problem, but we should not create another one.
