Everyone learns and digests information in different ways. Some prefer a more hands on approach, whereas others learn best when they self-teach.
Thankfully there are several different study options avaiable for those preparing for the CMA exam. Today I’m going to be sharing the pros and cons about self study vs instructor led prep.
Should You Self Study?
These days, self study is typically the most common way to prep for the CMA exam. This is partly because there are so many programs a candidate can choose from.
Each self-study course offers their own tools and resources as well. For example, the Gleim review offers thousands of practice questions, hours of audio review, mock exams and a personal counselor.
Hock is another review program and it comes with everything from flash cards, audio review, video training, practice questions, mock exams, in depth explanations, teacher support and more.
Your budget may dictate which course you can afford, but regardless of money, if you are a motivated candidate any one of these courses will do.
Is Instructor Led Live Classes Right for You?
As I said above, not everyone learns the same. Some people prefer live, instructor led classes. This sort of environment keeps them accountable and gives them access to a teacher at all times.
If you lack the discipline required to self-study, then chances are this learning environment will be more beneficial to you.
Unfortunately there aren’t as many options when it comes to instructor-led classes, which is something you might want to take into consideration when choosing a prep course.
Having earned my CMA designation, I am fully aware of the benefits that both live class and self-study provide, which is why I created the CMA Exam Academy. This program is a culmination of both learning styles. It offers teacher instruction, thousands of practice questions, flashcards, audio, video, exam formula guides and explanations, study hacks, weekly accountability coaching and more.

Which is Right for You?
With so many great study options available, it really comes down to you deciding on a study path that is best suited to your learning needs. If you lack the motivation to stick to your own study schedule and prefer to be accountable to a teacher, then instructor led classes are probably best for you.
On the other hand, If you prefer to work around your own schedule and self learn the material then self-study is your best option.
There is no right or wrong way to prepare for the CMA exam, so whichever option you choose will be right. Just remember to study hard and work your butt off.
Good luck!
