I had a terrible fear of public speaking as a child. I’m a writer first and foremost and that always got me out of ever really having to stand up and speak when I was at school. But when I went to university, they had whole modules on public speaking. I didn’t know what to do.
I remember being up until 2am crying because I had to do a presentation the next day. There were times when I was a complete nervous wreck, and my voice wouldn’t come out properly.
But the biggest surprise was while I was full of fear, once I started, that would dissipate and I would find that I was enjoying myself.
If you’re a consultant dealing with corporates, one of the things you might be wondering at the moment is whether you should be doing more public speaking. That could be webinars or being a guest speaker or it could be appearing on podcasts. The women I speak to fall into two camps: either they definitely want to be doing public speaking and feel very comfortable with that, or they say, ‘everyone is doing a TEDx talk, do I have to do one too?’
Whether you do public speaking all the time, or you’re summing up the courage to give it a go, storytelling helps you put together a compelling talk. You don’t just want to speak to your audience, you want to deliver a message which resonates with them. And ideally, one that has them keen to find out how they can work with you.
My guest on the Seven Figure Consultant Podcast this week is speaking coach and storytelling expert Johanna Walker. She has presented for corporations, non-profits, start-ups, community organizations, and the TEDx stage, helping audiences develop authentic presence as speakers, find the ideas they want to be known for, and craft those ideas into compelling presentations that attract clients and make bigger impact.
This is a great conversation that you will gain insights from whichever camp you’re in when it comes to public speaking.

I've created a free PDF report called The Six Elements of a Seven Figure Business.?It’s my most popular free resource and in it I outline the 6 areas of unscaled businesses that need to change in order to move past being ‘booked up and burned out’ and shifting into that higher gear that gets you cruising again.
It’s the framework that helps consultant women like you find their feet and get back to leading the business, rather than being buried in client work and back-end business operations.

3 年I’m starting to get more comfortable with public speaking but one of the things that holds me back from doing podcasts/webinars etc. in my field is the belief that whatever I might say has already been said by someone else and said better.
