Should You Apply for a Job You Don’t Qualify For?
During a sermon, Pastor Michael Todd shared a story about how he was the 6th?member of his High School basketball team. Now, if you know anything about basketball, you’ll know that a team has 5 players – which meant that Pastor Todd was the substitute.
Me? I was the 11th?member of the Banani Secondary School team in my time. Basically, there were two full teams that could exist without me. I really sucked at the sport, to be honest, but I stayed committed. I woke up at 05AM for training, I never missed practice, I even dedicated my free time to extra practice. Alas, I was never picked to play in a single game.
Fast forward to my time as an A Level student at Simba International School where my love for basketball did not die. When I joined the school, there was no girls’ basketball team, so I joined the boys’ team. Training was tough; the coach and my teammates always reminded me that we had “no girls on the team”, so I was tussled with like any other player.
In no time, the coach started calling me the Vice Captain and soon afterwards, a girls’ team was formed with me as the Captain. I may not have been the most qualified, but my dedication and persistence availed an opportunity for me. In no time, I was elected as House Captain of Kudu House – where I served under the Prefectural Board.

What has this got to do with professionalism? Well, in a like manner, I was once employed for a job that I did not qualify for. I had little experience in the field, but my employers were impressed by my CV and believed that I could be trained on the job. I was not qualified, but I was available and eager to learn.
I won’t lie and say it was easy, but I learnt so much from that job that it prepared me for future jobs. Like I always say: one must always take advantage of every opportunity to grow where they are planted. In your quest to find employment, I hope you will remember these words by Pastor Todd: “God is not looking for the most capable. He’s looking for the next available [person].” And He’s got a whole lot of potential employers who are willing to offer you the opportunity to grow despite your lack of qualification.

2 年It's important to always apply for a job that one meets the qualifications for unless it's a job on training, then it's okay to apply even when you do not have the qualifications.
