Should you accept a counter-offer?

For a very long time we used to believe that employees should never accept a counter-offer; however, we have been observing some very interesting behaviour and changed our minds.

There are circumstances in which you might want to consider accepting a counter-offer and thus why we will discuss these in this article so you don't do yourself a disservice next time.

1. They don't want to lose you

Your employer might not want to lose you for many reasons (e.g., you're a great employee, you have domain expertise, you are the only one who understands a certain software).

Your employer is not offering you more than you are worth but has realized that you would walk away with specific know-how that's critical for their operations which will cost more.

Furthermore, the cost to replace you can potentially become even higher than their counter-offer once they account for recruiting services, training, and impact to their product/service.

2. It doesn't necessarily mean you are in a toxic environment

The vast majority of employees start to feel bitter when they realize their colleagues, friends or strangers across the industry earn more than them and have the same or less experience.

But there's no need to feel bitter about it, all you need to remember is that you negotiated (we hope you did) and agreed to join the organization in terms that were acceptable to you.

Just because you know others who earn more or your life needs have changed it doesn't necessarily mean that your employer is bad and doesn't care about you as an employee.

3. Re-visit your reasons for leaving

This brings us to you re-visiting your reasons for living, ask yourself whether you are looking to leave because of your current compensation or an actual toxic environment.

If it is the former then a counter-offer would be something that you should consider; however, if you work in a toxic environment no amount of money should make you stay.

4. More money is not worth your mental health

Whether you decide to leave or stay, make sure you are not just chasing money as that will be a recipe for disaster down the road and you will find yourself in the exact same spot soon.

If a new employer throws a lot of money at you but the work environment is unhealthy or you believe it won't help you grow in your career, don't be tempted by any sum of money.

The same applies to your current employer, if they decide to offer you a much better compensation and you have already experienced enough toxicity, make sure you just leave.

Hundreds of professionals have been able to negotiate their compensation to become financially strong and you can learn how to do that also on our upcoming free webclass .

One of them is Udayraj Sathe, who was able to negotiate an 83% salary increase from India without even having to leave his current organization, you can watch it right on this video.

This is really interesting, people ALWAYS say never to accept the counter offer and I’ve wondered about why. I understand the main argument, but it seems like such a black and white analysis. Nobody has the same exact story so how do they know that someone’s counteroffer situation might not work out for them?

Couldn't disagree more. 28+ years expereince in this space, and all I have seen is Counter-Offers very rarely work out for either party. Employers will raise your quotas, make job life very difficult, and once you dont hit your new numbers, will then fill your job asap, and let you go in a NY minute; you're outside the circle now, no trust or respect. And conversely, Candidates will continue to look for another position; what will money do for you, keep you longer, how much longer? It's like a bad marriage; you've already decided you're unhappy, and both have tried to work it out. All either side is doing now is buying time. The Loyalty, the Trust, and Respect is gone. Both parties should keep moving forward!
