Should we feel threatened by ChatGPT?

Do you feel threatened or motivated by the increase of AI? This is a question many IT and Tech professionals are pondering since the introduction of AI technology such as ChatGPT.

We can agree that artificial intelligence has certainly changed the lives of working professionals on a global scale. Although some are concerned that AI could replace jobs performed by humans altogether, others see AI as an opportunity for growth within their role.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a conversational chatbot and language model launched by artificial intelligence company OpenAI in 2022. The bot can generate endless written responses to questions and instructions in an instant. ?

ChatGPT responds to almost any question or demand in an intellectual and composed way, but needless to say there have been a number of issues that users have encountered since the release.

What are the benefits and capabilities?

The main advantage of using ChatGPT over other AI platforms is its ability to create contextually appropriate text. You can rely on ChatGPT to be grammatically correct and semantically meaningful in its response – much like a human. This makes it an extremely useful tool for writers working in any industry, or for those looking to research an exact topic very quickly.

Many have said that ChatGPT will be used as a search engine tool. Although ChatGPT isn’t here to replace the likes of Google or Safari, thanks to the transformer architecture, the model is able to understand each word input, rather than only picking up on keywords. ?

ChatGPT is able to provide content in different styles and formats, making it suitable for a wide range of uses such as content generation that can be generalised, personalised, engaging and creative, language translation, and much more.

What are the drawbacks?

Unfortunately, ChatGPT is prone to inaccuracies, which OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has even admitted himself as he warns users about relying on ChatGPT “for anything important right now.”

This insinuates that the model is still in progress, like many other technology applications on the market. ??

Altman says that it shouldn’t be solely relied on for factual queries, rather it should be used for “fun, creative inspiration”.

In the wrong hands, ChatGPT could be used unethically in education and in the world of work – the ability to plagiarise is heightened. The inaccuracy rate has actually been cited to be between 15% - 21%!?

Our opinion

Although ChatGPT clearly has a long list of benefits, accessibility will likely be the biggest issue for the software going forward. As Altman says, “The danger is that it is confident and wrong a significant fraction of the time”, therefore users may become too reliant on it, and end up with incorrect data as a result.

Since the launch, there have been a handful of updates made, but ChatGPT still has a long way to go before it is considered a reliable source of information. ?

What are your thoughts on ChatGPT? Let us know in the comments!?
