Should we cancel people or not?
The latest wave of #metoo "outing"in Quebec has rattled the local showbiz industry. It started with an Instagram account of women naming powerful artists with stories of sexual misconduct, harassment and in some cases rape. Some of those artists admitted to the deeds or alluded to the stories not being entirely wrong nor true. As a results for some, record deals were terminated, commercial and popular Brands associated with them cut their ties, shows were cancelled, tv and radio gigs were lost, in one go. In other words they were instantly cancelled on what is now frowned upon as the "cancel culture".
Hear me out, in "normal" or "traditional" workplace, as a leader if you catch one of your employee cooking books and stealing from your company, you investigate and realize some of your partners have also been conned by the said employee; usually what happens is the person is fired without a severance package, the company distance themselves from the employee, the access to the building is revoked, there is no going away party and usually the personal belongings are sent through a courier unceremoniously. In a workplace term the person is terminated, fired or we can also say "cancelled". They lose their job, their income as in they face consequences of their actions.
Why is it then that the artists, popular, talented, when they get fired because of harmful behaviour, we tend to find it unfair? What is unfair about cutting ties from a person who harassed women, dehumanized them, used their popularity and power to exert sexual favours?
Why should they keep their product endorsement, their records deals? Basically why should they keep their jobs?
Is it because of their popularity and talent? Or is it because the misdeed is against women? Is it because it's sexual not physical or financial?
Is it really "cancelling" someone if what why confess to doing destroys careers, lives, and cause lifelong trauma?
These famous people in the showbiz, their music is still being played so residuals, friends and fans are still rallying for them, and they do deserve second and hundredth chances, but do they deserve a record deal? Shows? Brand endorsement?
Same as the employee who steals is fired so should the might powerful, talented, popular artists or anyone for that matter who abuse women. I say it's called "facing the music" not being cancelled. There are so many wrongs about cancel culture this is not one of them.
