Should professional employees join startups?
The font size of startup news continues to increase in India. Lot more are starting, lot more are raising funds and consequently lot more are hiring people. This article points to a continuous increase of startups jobs in 2020 while the GDP contracted. Current workforce employed in startups is estimated to be between 0.5-1M, between 15-25% of the IT Services industry.
As a professional either in early stages of the career or mid to late, how can one navigate the startup eco-system? Below are a few pointers:
Like all frameworks, this one is deeply flawed too and makes massive generalizations. Startups differ a lot from each other – consumer ones burn through a lot more capital vs. B2B ones. However, the essence is that as startups get more mature, they are great places for more experienced professionals.
What do you all think - both startups view and professional employee view?

3 年Rajul Garg Very nice pointer. Though there is a lot of gap that still exists in the Startup ecosystem in India specially when it comes to professional talent engagement. The higher educational system has a large share in it. The professional career journey begins mostly in large corporates after graduating where its organized , secure typical well defined workplace. Working in a Startup however could be a nightmare for those who don't hold to the vision & mission being passionate enough. The entrepreneurial aptitude in a professional defines the risk apatite weather to be part of a startup or a Corporate. On the other hand Startups badly need experienced professionals at all phases of their life cycle. I believe a balanced distribution of experienced professionals with freshers would be a ideal talent strategy. In answer to your question I believe a new model of talent ecosystem where Professional Communities, Startups & Corporates co-exist together with harmony is a win win perspective for all stakeholders.

3 年Rajul Garg interesting. Another tricky question is the role of specialist Vs. generalist up to Series A stage because things are in a state of flux and whether large established firms employees fit into that role. An employee from large firms is flushed with resources and is playing out a product/business model which is working, so doubt if they fit into resource-constrained, in a flux product/business model startup until the scaling stage. We all know startups are a brutal environment, with one man doing the work of 5 people in established firms. The tricky question is how do you slice the pie in an objective way which is fair and either parties don't feel cheated.
