Ramadan Mubarak to all those observing! ?? This holy month brings spiritual reflection and community, but it's crucial to consider the health implications of fasting, especially for those with cardiovascular conditions.
Here are some key takeaways on Ramadan fasting and cardiovascular risks:
- ?? Risk Stratification: Understanding the "low/moderate," "high," and "very high" risk categories is vital. The IDF-DAR model, originally for diabetes, is now adapted for cardiovascular risk assessment.
- ?? Dehydration Dangers: Dehydration is a major concern, potentially leading to electrolyte abnormalities, hypotension, and exacerbating existing conditions like arrhythmias, acute kidney injury, and stroke. ??
- ?? Medication Compliance: Maintaining medication schedules is paramount. Missed doses of antiplatelets or anticoagulants can have severe consequences. ?
- ?? Hypertension & Diuretics: Ramadan fasting can significantly lower blood pressure in hypertensive individuals on diuretics, requiring close monitoring. ??
- ?? SGLT2i Caution: For those on SGLT2i, initiate low doses in the evening before Ramadan, increase fluid intake during non-fasting hours, and avoid in high-risk groups. ??
- ?? HOCM Awareness: Patients with HOCM are at high risk due to dehydration concerns, which can trigger life-threatening symptoms. ??
- ?? Study Limitations: Remember, studies are often observational, with small sample sizes and short follow-up periods. More research is needed! ??
It's essential for healthcare professionals and individuals to work together for a safe and healthy Ramadan. ??

5 天前Ultimately it could be DaH AHA guidelines next few years after proper research and evidence for pts with CVDs that want to fast.. Good step forwards. SGLT2 Is have been declared safe in Ramadhan taken at Iftar time. Good hydration indeed is re- emphasized for all pts.
