Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Rainy day. Cold. Snow in the mountains. Three days ago it was over 30 degrees, now it's barely 10. A perfect day to stay cozy in bed, right?

Not for me, and definitely not for her. It’s Friday the 13th, and our regular biweekly walking coaching session is on - bright and early. Yes, we walk while we talk. Movement clears the mind, sheds stress, and often leads to those “aha” moments.

Today’s session took a surprising turn. Just as we started our walk, she said: “Karmen, I’ve made my decision!”

It all started approx four months ago. She was struggling. “I’m not satisfied with the status quo which I am atm. I need to shake up the culture in the company, elevate the team, change something drastically... and really - think outside the matrix…”

So, we tackled it. We walked through scenarios, reviewed business cases, reflected on situations, and people, and explored her observations and ideas. Implemented. The mantra? Stay positive. Keep pushing. Learn how to communicate effectively with your team. Build those connections. Sometimes, progress is all about the right mindset and relentless effort.

But sometimes, despite your best efforts, the environment just doesn’t match your needs. That’s what she came to understand through our sessions over the past few months.

“I get it now," she said. "It’s not about them. It’s about me.”

You can’t change others, but you can change yourself.

And sometimes, despite all your hard work, moving on is the best option. Sometimes, teams even thrive after you’ve left. It’s not personal—it’s about finding the right fit.

As we wrapped up our session, she smiled and said, "Karmen, Friday the 13th is my lucky day. I’ve decided to take a bold step forward in my career. And I’m ready for it."

  • Find the language. Align with your teammates. Understand their perspectives. Build connections. Most problems can be resolved.

  • Self-awareness is power. Know when it’s time to shift gears and make a move.
  • Company fit matters. Being great doesn’t matter if you’re in the wrong place.
  • Leaving can be liberating. For you - and the team. Sometimes your departure is exactly what’s needed for everyone to thrive.
