Should I Remain Technical or Get Into Management?

Should I Remain Technical or Get Into Management?

Introduction?:

At some point in their careers, every professional has asked themselves this question: should they remain technical or pursue a?management role .?

In addition, some professionals want more financial growth in their careers and therefore might consider either of the options as a career path, depending on what the future job description looks like.

So, in this blog post, we will discuss the 'good' reasons for choosing either of the options.?

?? Interest Is An Indicator:

If I say you should do what you enjoy doing, you might think of it as Cliche.

But to be honest, when you pursue a career in your area of interest, you tend to invest more time and energy into learning more about it, implementing those learning, and growing in your career.?

If you think short-term and consider the money aspect as a motivator for your choice and your interest fades away over time, you might find yourself suffocated in the role you choose for yourself.

So, it's essential to give importance to your interest when choosing a specific role.?

?? Specialization Is The Key:

To excel in any profession and grow in that career path, one has to move away from being a generalist and become a specialist.

Becoming a specialist entails spending countless hours specializing in a subject that requires you to be focused.

It has been found that having specialization in technical areas results in higher pay packages because not many professionals are interested in dedicating the time and energy required to specialize in those particular tools and technologies.

?? Management Is Key?:

Even though organizations look at management positions as an overhead job, they still cannot do without a?project manager ?or a product manager because they coordinate, collaborate, resolve conflicts, and ensure that the organization's goals are met.?

?? From Mid Management To Senior Management?:

Even though?mid-management? positions are crucial for getting the job done, the journey of a mid manager to a senior management position is a tough road.

If you aspire to see yourself in a senior management position, you need to do exceptionally well as a project manager to move further up the ladder.

You will need to manage office politics, demonstrate leadership skills, influence stakeholders, and become a people's person to rise to the top.?

Conclusion?:

As discussed, there is nothing right or wrong in both career paths. However, each approach has a different requirement than the other.

For taking the technical direction, you need to become a subject matter expert in your domain.

For moving up the ladder, a more people-oriented approach is needed where you demonstrate leadership skills with your peers and need the ability to influence your stakeholders and top management people. Eventually, it boils down to what you enjoy doing the most.??
