Should I Go Abroad After My Articles? What to do after I become a CA (SA)?
Travis Fisher, CA (SA), CPA

When I started my articles back in 2018, I had one goal: moving abroad after qualifying as CA (SA) . In fact, had it been possible, I might have packed my bags mid-articles! But not everyone is laser-focused on international secondment from day one, and many don’t know where to begin. As third-year trainees count down their days to the end of articles, I’m often asked:
??????? ??????? Should I go abroad?
??????? ??????? How does it work?
??????? ??????? What if it’s not for me?
??????? ??????? Where should I go?
Here’s my answer: take the leap! ??
Get out of your comfort zone, embrace new cultures, and work in different environments. It’s intimidating, sure—but the transformation is life-changing, both personally and professionally. Whether you stay abroad or return to South Africa, your career will gain an undeniable edge.
A Partner at BDO South Africa once told me, “The beauty of being a CA(SA) is that you can practically pull out a map, close your eyes, point, and know you’ll find a job there.” And they were right. Whether it’s Europe—London or the Netherlands—or further afield like Australia, Asia, or the USA, there’s no shortage of options for those eager to gain International experience and indulge their inner globetrotter.
?
How Do You Find a Job Abroad? ??
If you’re with any medium-to-large accounting firm, they likely have a presence in your destination.? BDO operates in over 160 plus countries—so I had my pick. ( The sunshine in Tampa, Florida, was too tempting to pass up!) But be open. Sometimes the best experiences come from the least-expected places. And here’s how to start:
??????? ??????? Start early—don’t wait until year-end to decide what you want to do.
??????? ??????? Network internally—your local partners likely have international connections through previous trainees or International conferences that they have attended.
??????? ??????? Leverage your local HR—local recommendations can be powerful.

??????? ??????? Use LinkedIn—reach out to fellow CA (SA)'s working abroad and see if they can help you get a foot in the door.
?
How Long Should You Go for? ?
At least 1-2 years. You’ll need a few months to settle in. It took me over 6 months to feel at home in Tampa. If you don’t love it? You’re not locked in forever. Most secondments range from 3 months to 2 years, and if you’re thriving, you can always extend your contract or go permanent. Win-win!
What If My Firm Doesn’t Have an International Presence? ??
Offshore accounting firms even including like BDO’s own offshore division, offer great remote opportunities from South Africa to get a foot in the door. Work for them for a year before making a leap abroad the following year once prove yourself. A remote gig can often lead to a permanent move abroad later. You can also look at other companies like SAPRO or Makosi that can also provide that international experience both in person and virtually.
Why Going Abroad Matters ??
It will change your life in ways you can’t even predict. Many firms cover relocation costs, flights, and even support your significant other. Beyond logistics, you’ll gain exposure to different industries, systems, and people. And you’ll get to see the world while doing it.

In Closing
If you’re a third-year trainee and wondering about your next steps—don’t hesitate. Start planning now, and be bold in your ambitions. Whether you stay abroad or come back to SA, the experience will give your career (and CV) an international edge.

Good luck, and keep flying the CA (SA) flag high! ??
