Should I buy wood windows?

Being a Brand Ambassador for Pella has allowed me to learn a lot about how people perceive about certain types of windows. And from what I've learned, it's my opinion that wood windows sometimes get a bad rap.

A customer will come into my Newington NH showroom and tell me that one window they don't want to look at is a wood one. They proceed to tell me they rot, warp etc. When I ask them when they had wood windows, I've often told 30+ years ago.

A lot of things in the window industry have changed since 1994.

Before we get to the main reason that wood windows are a great choice, let's talk about the advantages that wood windows bring to the table. First, there are countless ways to customize them. Whether it's shape, size or color, wood windows can be painted or stained (giving you more color options.) And you can custom match the color to your home.

You can use wood windows to bring more light into a space that's difficult to do with other window materials. You can also create a unique window design (my immediate thought was a witch's window (what are witch windows.)

Wood is attractive. It has a natural grain giving it a look which adds an aesthetic character and curb appeal to any home. It's the ideal choice for historic homes and can add natural craftmanship to a modern home.

Finally, what I feel is the best reason for choosing wood windows... they can be combined with exteriors like fiberglass or aluminum. This makes them more durable and resistant to rot, warping and adds a protection against inclement weather. Wood is energy efficient and absorbs and releases heat. Add aluminum cladding to the exterior (which is a great insulator) and you get the best of both materials.

Wood is a durable material. A well-maintained window has an average lifespan of 20 years. So, consider wood windows. To learn more about Pella's energy efficient wood windows, go to: pellabranch.com/new-england.
