Ever come across a job posting that feels perfect but you don't meet all the requirements? It's common. But before ruling yourself out, consider whether the missing skills are crucial or just 'nice to have.' Sometimes, you might possess other skills that make you a good fit. However, if there are multiple crucial requirements you lack, it's likely better to refrain from applying.
But if you're missing only a few 'desirable' rather than 'essential' elements from the requirements – like familiarity with a software package not central to the job or knowledge about the organisation or industry that can be learned – it's still advisable to apply.
Here's 3 reasons on why to apply:
In the end, applying, even if you don't meet every point, has more benefits than harm. Overcoming self-doubt and trying for roles you can excel in is key.
To effectively apply for a role despite not meeting all requirements, concentrate on showcasing what you offer instead of emphasising the areas where you fall short in your CV, cover letter, and interview responses.
Consider your transferable skills.
If a role demands line-management experience but you haven't led a team directly, highlight related experiences. Maybe you've supervised projects or improved stakeholder management through other responsibilities. Showcasing these skills in your CV and cover letter can enhance your application.

Show your commitment to learning.
If you lack a specific skill or experience with a program, demonstrate your proactive approach. Research ways to bridge the gap, like enrolling in an online course to upgrade your skills. Highlight your dedication to personal development and eagerness to learn. Additionally, use your social media presence to exhibit your continuous learning mindset, as hiring managers often review these profiles.
Tailor your CV and cover letter.
Not meeting all the 'required' skills doesn't disqualify you. However, it's crucial to highlight how well you fit the role. Use the job description's language in your CV, employing action verbs like "built," "headed," and "enhanced" to emphasise relevant achievements. Aligning your wording with what the employer seeks, strengthens your application.
Showcase your expertise with examples.
Support your resume by demonstrating real-life successes from past roles, even if your skills don’t align perfectly with the job requirements. Highlight experiences that make you a strong candidate, even if they aren't explicitly mentioned in the job description. For instance, your experience in a related industry or proficiency in certain software could significantly benefit the role, emphasising your potential fit beyond the listed requirements.
