Should Getting a New Job Be One of Your New Year's Resolutions?

It's that time of year again when people start making their New Year resolutions. Should getting a new job in the New Year be on your list?

Let's be honest with each other. Most people are not likely to keep their New Year's resolutions. So why set yourself up for failure?

I get that changing jobs for many is a scary idea. You're giving up the comfort of knowing that you've got a steady paycheck. Or are you? Unless you've got an ironclad employment contract, this certainly is not the case. You could go into work tomorrow, only to find out that the job you have no longer exists!

Or perhaps you're so comfortable in your job that you could do it in your sleep? Nothing wrong with that, right? But, what if you've got another ten, twenty or thirty years of work ahead of you. Can you imagine yourself phoning it in for the rest of your life?

Maybe there's one thing that's bugging you about your current work situation, which seems to be clouding your judgment. Say you're struggling with leading your team. You thought it was them for a long time, but now you think it might be you. If you could learn to be a better leader, would you enjoy your work more? Would you still be looking to leave?

So, let's go back to the original question of should getting a new job be one of your New Years' resolutions. I say no. In fact, tear up the list of resolutions you've just created.

Now think about the one thing you want to move forward a mile in the New Year. This area is where you should be putting all of your energy. Then work backward. Map out what you need to accomplish each month to achieve your goal.
