Should crackers be banned knowing fully well that Diwali comes once a year?

Ah! the infamous question which pops up every year around Diwali.

On why crackers should be banned? Here’s a well-researched answer by Deepak Mehta. Check it out.

But we all know that despite all these rulings and awareness campaigns people are still going to use these crackers. Some for fun, some in sheer ignorance and some to satisfy their ego against SC ruling.

So, being an Engineer I cannot stop myself to think of an alternative to this situation which is much more-

  • Safe.
  • Cheap.
  • Enjoyable.
  • No fuss about banning.

Currently, during Diwali fireworks are used in almost every mohalla, locality and family of India who can afford it. Now after some calculations (assumed), this figure comes out to be around 20 crore families (4 people in each family). On an average, Rs. 1000 per family (spread from Rs. 300–7000) is being spent on fireworks. But what they get after spending so much money is this.

This is unsafe, uneconomical and above all as per my sense of perception highly unaesthetic. But what if instead of this you get something like this.

Much Better. Right!

What I’m suggesting is that instead of every family/person buying thousands of fireworks individually we should try to collaborate and put up a centralized firework celebration for every city.

Something similar is done every year in Singapore. They put 1000’s of creative fireworks at pre-decided locations which can be seen from many sites.

They set up a team collaborate, plan, strategize, put safety measures and in turn provide one of the most magnificent fireworks that you have ever seen in your life.

So, How it could be done here in India?

  • Every city need to collaborate with some local organizations and District Associations.
  • Create a clear cut plan and budget.
  • Aware people, persuade them to contribute and complete your target.
  • Hire some good firework artists and experts.
  • Buy fireworks in bulk from licensed manufacturers in India so that they do not incur a loss, as people will stop buying from them.
  • Fireworks is all about seeing sparkling colors in the night sky. Our set up should be so marvelous that makes people go crazy and they could never think of buying crackers on their own. As they could never achieve something like this on their own.

Advantages:

  • It would be much more economical from an individual point of view.
  • Safer, as people will just watch it from a safe distance.
  • Less pollution and havoc will be generated.
  • Undoubtedly it will be much more creative, magnificent show than what you can get at your home.

And at last, if possible, ban individuals from buying crackers and allow only these Associations/Organizations to buy and organize firework shows after proper permissions and clearances.

Any suggestions are most welcomed.

Cheers!
