It Should All Be This Funny

As a rule, I try not to swear in front of students. You have to set an example, right? Sometimes, however, swear words come in handy. They're guaranteed to grab attention and make mnemonics that stick.

The word sh*t, for instance, makes a great mnemonic!

Fun fact: before it became a four-letter word, sh*t was a common term for excrement. Until, of course, someone decided it was obscene.

Shitty grammar

In English, the third person singular in the present needs an -s, and students need persistent help to remind them of that rule.

Kevin Smith: if you name that shit, you claim that shit

So here's an effective mnemonic that students love learning, as it spells serious fun.

I simply invite them to say she-he-it out loud and repeat it as fast as they can. You try.

I swear it works

I call it the sh*t-rule, and it works like a charm.

You may call it a swear word, but I swear that sh*t is a mnemonic that sticks – figuratively, of course.

All grammar should be this funny.

What timing! I started revising present tense in class this week. The minute the 3rd person reared it's head, I thought "Oh no here we go again." It really is a difficult concept for some students to internalise. Reciting rules means nothing unless they can confidently use the grammar. I'm going to try the sh!t method. I'll keep you posted.

We aren't Politics & Poetics teachers, but language teachers. Which means exposing our students to the whole thing and leaving the choice to them
