Should AI have a say in your say?

Hey everyone!
I hope you are having a great day. Just wanted to share an article that I came across and it blew my mind.
The article is about how GPT - 4 by OpenAI can be used for automating content moderation. For the people who are unaware, content moderation is when you filter out the bad/unwanted stuff like hate speech, nudity, violence, or spam from online platforms. It is extremely important as it aims to keep the online community safe for use. This is usually done by a mix of humans and computers. However, this process can be painstakingly slow as each and every piece of content needs to be reviewed. Like any other activity involving humans, it can also be inconsistent and stressful.
GPT-4 aims to make content moderation easier by using a technique called policy refinement. What is policy refinement? It is a technique used where we give the AI model a set of rules that tell it what kind of content is OK or not OK on a particular platform. Then, it is given some examples of content that may or may not break the rules followed by labelling each example as OK or not OK along with an explanation.
They say that this technique can help save time when you want to update your content moderation rules from days to hours. It can also help clear confusion in the rules and make them more consistent for human moderators. It is interesting to know that OpenAI is already using GPT-4 for their own content policy and moderation.
All of this seems like a boon for the moderators, but is GPT-4 really good and reliable for content moderation? GPT-4 is not perfect and may make mistakes or miss some details in some cases. There will also be challenges and limitations of using AI for content moderation, like data quality, bias, ethics, and transparency. How will the AI possibly keep up with all the various types of content? We just need to wait and find out.
In my opinion, the human connect is still required. Tools like this should be used as a co-pilot to make one’s work more productive in the same amount of time, but it should not be solely reliant on the technology. So, what do you think? Should AI have a say in your say? Should we trust GPT-4 to decide what kind of content is good or bad online? Or should we leave this job to human moderators who have more experience and empathy?

1 年Thank you Souvik Ghosh for initiating this conversation. I believe that having a balanced approach to content moderation is crucial. While AI like ChatGPT can efficiently flag inappropriate content, human review adds the necessary context and nuance that AI might miss. The collaboration between AI and human moderators ensures a more comprehensive and accurate content filtering process. It might take more time, but the results are definitely worth it.
