Shorticle 447 – DRaaS using Azure Site Recovery for high availability application design
Cloud Well-Architected Framework has five pillars viz Cost Optimization, Performance, Reliability, Operational Excellence and Security which enables the benefits for cloud adoption for any application architecture in cloud platform. For Reliability and High availability of cloud applications, it is utmost importance to design a Disaster Recovery plan which can be replica of sites or clustered instance design with active-passive site recovery.
As per Gartner Magic Quadrant 2019, Microsoft Azure is recognized as leader in Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) feature. DRaaS is a fully-managed service which enables quick setup of Disaster Recovery of application, database and network services to ensure high availability.
Azure provides a fully-managed DRaaS facility called Azure Site Recovery (ASR) which is flexible in DR setup by enabling Site replication for On-premises to Azure platform or Multi-region site in Azure to Azure portal. In Azure Site Recovery, we can enable sequencing order for multi-tier applications which runs multiple VMs so that recovery issues can be reduced with the sequencing order.

ASR is ISO 27001 compliance with industry regulatory policies for multi-regional Site recovery to minimize downtime and enable high-availability and site reliability. Automatic synchronization of disk replica between sites and automatic recovery based on recovery order, ensures less manual effort in patching, deployment and updates between sites and routing Traffic manager between sites from multi-region make sure that the request are routed to active sites and there is no noticeable downtime (99.95% availability ensured by ASR).
We can also use Azure policy as part of ASR (newly introduced feature) so that a recovery policy is enabled for an Azure resource group will automatically enables the ASR policies to be applied for all the VMs added to the resource group thus enforcing automatic recovery to all the resources in the Resource group.
