In an Enterprise solutioning scenario, we have heard Design and Architecture to be inter-changeably used whereas in real-life they are different. Architecture is a fundamental model of a solution approach and design is the detail model of the solution approach.

When approaching towards a solution for a given problem, architecture leads towards roadmap, strategy and vision whereas design gets deeper to the technical implementation side of the solution approach.

Ideally, you will approach a solution from architecture to design in a top-down approach and sometimes travels very closely and parallel. In other words, architecture is a strategic point of view of the solution and design is the tactical point of view of the solution approach.

Architecture answers “what” is a solution and design answers “how” is a solution built and hence you have to prepare the solution approach using the right method in a step-by-step manner.
