Built in the heart of Lucknow, the Rumi Darwaza was constructed in the year 1748. The story behind the construction of Rumi Darwaza is an interesting one, wherein the Nawab during the times of famine offered meals to his countrymen in exchange for building this magnificent structure. This 60-foot-tall structure is also called as the Turkish Gate owing to its resemblance to Bab-I-Humayun Gate in Turkey. It displays the Awadh style of architecture and is considered to be an engineering marvel as there are no visible supporting fittings in the construction.

Built as a residential space for the generals and higher ranks of the East India Company, the British Residency was turned into a refugee camp for the Britishers during the revolt of 1857. As of date, there are ruins of this structure which are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and a British cemetery nearby which is the grave place for all the Britishers who lost their lives during the siege of Lucknow. For historical purposes, a light and sound show is held every evening at the British Residency which shows the exact happenings of the Revolt of 1857.
