A Short Story of Broadband
The picture below tells it all. It aggregates the TRAI's published data of total broadband subscribers (>512 kbps, both wireless and wireline) in India since 2014 till June 2017 (Sept 2017 is yet to be published).
The following conclusions can be drawn.
- Total BB subs have increased 6 folds from March 2014 till June 2017.
- The rate of growth of BB subs has doubled with the entry of RJIO in Sept 2016.
- Wireless contributes more than 90% of the total BB connections.
- Apart from RJIO, the key contributors to growth are Bharti and Vodafone.
- BB teledensity in the country is approximate 25%.
- At the current rate, the BB teledensity is likely to double in next 2.5 years.
- More spectrum will be needed to support this exponential growth.
