A Short Story of Broadband

The picture below tells it all. It aggregates the TRAI's published data of total broadband subscribers (>512 kbps, both wireless and wireline) in India since 2014 till June 2017 (Sept 2017 is yet to be published).

The following conclusions can be drawn.

  1. Total BB subs have increased 6 folds from March 2014 till June 2017.
  2. The rate of growth of BB subs has doubled with the entry of RJIO in Sept 2016.
  3. Wireless contributes more than 90% of the total BB connections.
  4. Apart from RJIO, the key contributors to growth are Bharti and Vodafone.
  5. BB teledensity in the country is approximate 25%.
  6. At the current rate, the BB teledensity is likely to double in next 2.5 years.
  7. More spectrum will be needed to support this exponential growth.

Interested to know your thoughts on RJIOs place in the evolving ecosystem. Also how BB growth will lead to market segmentation.
