Short-staffed? Time to rethink your leadership development!

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are currently experiencing a shortage of staff.?Your patience with the additional wait time is appreciated” has become the new welcome message of my bank, favorite travel websites and healthcare agencies.?

Not that we need any additional reminders of how hard it is to find good people right now.?We are ALL experiencing staffing shortages every day!?

Case in point; right after the restaurants started opening up in Columbus, my husband and step-kids were so excited to go to what had been their favorite pizza place for decades, Tommy’s.?When they arrived, they were disappointed to find that the dining room was closed (due to being short-staffed), only takeout was available, those orders were backed up and the staff that was there, rude.?

They decided to go to a pizza place that they would have never gone to before – Tommy’s competition.?It was booming!?Full service, busy as before the pandemic and the staff – energetic and welcoming.?So, what made the difference??

Why was one business thriving while the other flailing??Right down the road and very similar product??(Side note: Due to a long-standing feud, it is rumored that Tommy’s and this other pizzeria even have the same original pizza recipe.)

We did some digging and found out – the other pizza shop wasn’t paying more.?They weren’t offering better hours or other perks.?This left us to conclude one thing… that the management found a way to create a better culture where this staff wanted to be.

One of the main hallmarks of a culture like this is – great leadership!?I’ve even worked in companies that paid BELOW the market value salary for the position I was in because it was such a great place to work due to my direct manager.?

If you needed an additional reason to invest in your Leaders and Future Leaders, staff retention should be high on your list.? If you’d like to discuss creating or expanding a Leadership Development Program for your organization, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.?

I just started watching "Ted Lasso" on Apple TV. It's rarely about the money or the benefits or any other monetary reward. It's leadership, and leadership defines culture.
