Short Review of Ischemia- and Hypoxia-Protective Roles of “Big Potassium” (BK) Channels

Due to variability in component composition and posttranslational modifications, BK (#big_potassium) channel subtypes are expressed in different frequencies in various organs/tissues, with differing chemo-sensitivities and 2nd-messenger transduction processes. There is emerging and accumulating evidence that the “BK” subfamily of large-conductance potassium channels is involved in a diverse variety of physiological processes, and perhaps coordinated, protective or counteractive responses to local or generalized #ischemia and #hypoxia.
