A Short Letter to my Mother

I spent every day of my existence knowing you were there, whether beside me or a short a phone call away. Even on the days when we would not talk, you always visited me, in a thought, a dream, a smile. As a child, you held me tight, caring for my every desire as if I were the only person that ever mattered, that ever existed. You taught me my first word, my first phrase, my first emotion. As a teenager, you patiently sat for hours as I shared my visions, my qualms, my heartbreaks. You challenged me to reach for the stars and would never accept anything less. When war ripped our lives, you unselfishly encouraged me to continue an old dream in a new land. As a young man, I knew that I could always turn to you for loving, caring, unfiltered advice and, of course… for a hearty meal. Through my successes, you found yours. As the years passed, I watched each one of my children look at you in awe. From a young age, they were inspired by your strength as they admired the energy that fueled your life and all those you touched. My daughters continuously refer to your brilliance, to your elegance, to your beautiful dancing eyes. My son to your perseverance and love of life. 

But now you have left us, left me, suddenly, yet peacefully. I imagine you back in my father’s arms. This is the first day of my life without you. I know that you will always visit me, whispering in my ear your loving words, lifting me when I am down, advising me when I am lost. I will miss you, my mother. Yes, I will really miss you…
