What’s new in innovation

Computing with error-corrected quantum computers

Last year, we debuted a new way to encode quantum information into error correcting codes — one that gave us confidence in our ability to build error-free quantum computers with a lot less overhead than we previously thought. We call it the gross code, and it’s based on a family of codes called qLDPC codes…”

In search of AI algorithms that mimic the brain

“AI is advancing so rapidly it can be easy to forget how mysterious deep neural networks, the building blocks of modern AI, still are. Dmitry Krotov was finishing his PhD in theoretical physics just as deep learning was taking off. Intrigued by its potential, he dropped quantum field theory to focus on understanding neural nets and their amazing computational capabilities…”

In case you missed it

Inventing the devices that underpin how the world communicates

In the early 1960s, IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center was brand new. Opened in 1961, scientists were eager to start working in such a massive, beautiful space dedicated to uncovering the future of computing through fundamental research. And within a year of the facility opening its doors, a group of researchers did just that…”

Mike's presentation was truly captivating! From honoring the IBMers behind the semiconductor laser to delving into Hopfield networks and brain-mimicking AI algorithms, and even exploring a new paradigm in quantum computing—donuts in hyperspace—each topic was presented brilliantly. Keep shining, Mike Murphy!????
