I wanted to share with you a fantastic story about Adam Miller who works within our credit control department.
Last weekend Adam gave a speech to the Family Justice Board on his personal experience of the social care system in the UK.
The Family Justice Board was set up to improve the performance of the family justice system and to ensure the best possible outcomes for children who come into contact with it.
Adam presented his brilliant speech to an audience made up of lawyers, solicitors, barristers and key social workers who are responsible for the important decisions that help improve the future of young people in the system.
In Adams words ‘The main idea I put across was being someone like myself, sometimes it is quite hard to distinguish who your family actually is; as a result I am quite often left feeling that I don’t have family. This is a problem because young people need family – it’s part of human nature. As a result a lot of times children will spend time with people they consider ‘family’ but are actually bad influences, doing so leads to making the ‘wrong’ choices and talking a bad road in life. This almost happened to me on a couple of occasions.’
I then went on to discuss the importance of professionals following ‘Adam’s Rule’ which is the ideology that the majority of the time within social work (and other industries) practice generally follows a ‘one size fits all’ statute and the fact that this doesn’t work. I expressed my opinion that there needs to be more personalization; the professionals need to get to know the children as individuals, and make them feel as though they are family, whilst tailoring their work and processes so that they get exactly what they need. Treat everyone as a priority and not just the ‘most troubled’ Even if this made a small difference it could have a big enough impact to help young people reach their potential and not go on the wrong path.
We can’t stress how proud everyone at The Shore Group are of this man, he truly is an inspiration to other children struggling within the system.
Adam started with us as an apprentice, and has gone on to secure himself a permanent role within the business. He is a key member of our credit control team and is looking to progress within our sales division.
In a time where people are shying away from taking on apprentices, this just shows you how today’s youth can inspire the next generation.
Big thank you to our Commercial Director Carey Jelliman who has mentored Adam throughout his short career with us.
