Shohei Ohtani: The First 50/50 Player in MLB History

MIAMI – Shohei Ohtani made history once again on Thursday night, becoming the first player in Major League Baseball history to record 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season. The Los Angeles Dodgers star accomplished the feat in spectacular fashion during a 20-4 victory over the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park.

A Historic Night for Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani’s three home runs, six hits, and 10 RBIs led the Dodgers to a resounding win over the Marlins, cementing his place as one of the most dominant players in baseball history. His 50th home run in the seventh inning marked a career high and a franchise record for the Dodgers, while his two stolen bases earlier in the game pushed him into the 50/50 club.

  • Home Run Count: 51 home runs (new Dodgers record)
  • Stolen Bases: 50 steals in the season
  • RBIs: 10 RBIs in one game (new Dodgers record)

Ohtani’s first milestone came early in the game when he stole his 50th base in the first inning. In the sixth inning, he hit a 438-foot home run for his 49th of the season. Then, in the seventh inning, Ohtani blasted a 391-foot shot into the stands to officially make history.

"I’m happy and relieved to finally reach the 50/50 milestone," Ohtani said. "It was something I wanted to achieve for a long time."

Unmatched Achievements

Ohtani’s incredible performance saw him join multiple exclusive clubs and set several new records. Here are the key achievements from his historic day:

  • First 50/50 Player: Ohtani is now the only player in MLB history to reach 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season.
  • Three-Home Run Game: He became the first player to hit three home runs and steal two bases in a single game.
  • RBIs Record: Ohtani’s 10 RBIs set a new Dodgers franchise record and are the most by any player from the leadoff spot since 1920.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Ohtani’s historic feat: "He’s doing things no one has ever done before. He could be the best to ever play this game."

The Path to the Playoffs

This game also secured the Dodgers a spot in the postseason, marking Ohtani’s first playoff appearance. After 866 regular-season games, Ohtani will finally get a chance to showcase his talents on the biggest stage.

The Dodgers will now prepare for their next series against the Colorado Rockies as they continue their push for the National League West title.
