A shocking revelation has emerged, suggesting senior British soldiers stationed at the Nanyuki military base in Kenya have been implicated in a disturbing 'Coin-Tossing' Initiation - Where Condoms Hang in the Balance!
According to a report published in the UK-based?Mail on Sunday , recruits can decide in 'coin-tossing' initiation ceremonies to prove how 'brave' they are on whether to wear a condom or not as they engage prostitutes as part of an initiation process.? The more senior soldiers would flip a coin – "heads you could use a condom, tails you could not."
This is a form of abuse; it's called hazing!!
What is Hazing?
This is any activity expected of someone joining or participating, as part of joining a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them, regardless of a person’s willingness to participate.
Common examples of hazing include behaviors requiring high-risk drinking, physical endurance challenges, humiliation and degradation, isolation or exclusion, sexual harassment or assault, dangerous behavior, sleep deprivation, forced servitude, psychological manipulation, and property damage or theft.

#?Facts About Hazing, and Common Misperceptions
Misperception #1: Hazing is exclusive to fraternities and sororities.
The truth is, that hazing transcends organizational boundaries. From military units to athletic teams, religious cults to professional schools, hazing rears its ugly head across various sectors of society.
Misperception #2: Hazing is harmless fun gone wrong.
Hazing is not a prank; it is a calculated act of power and control over others. It is abusive, degrading, and often life-threatening.
Misperception #3: A little hazing is acceptable so long as it's not malicious.
Regardless of intent, hazing perpetuates a culture of victimization. It serves no purpose in fostering respect or discipline within a group.

Misperception #4: Hazing builds character and discipline.
Respect cannot be taught through coercion. Hazing breeds mistrust and alienation, undermining the very values it purports to instill.
Misperception #5: If someone consents, it's not hazing.
Consent does not absolve perpetrators of responsibility. The law recognizes the influence of pressure and coercion, disregarding consent as a defense.
Misperception #6: Identifying hazing is subjective.
Common sense dictates that any activity endangering life/well-being is unacceptable.
Misperception #7: Hazing doesn't happen here.
Hazing is pervasive, even in esteemed organizations. Denial only perpetuates the cycle of abuse, hindering efforts to combat it.
Breaking the Cycle: Challenging Excuses
Hazing, fuelled by the necessity to forge connections in unfamiliar settings, has unfortunately become a prevalent phenomenon. The compelling drive to belong propels individuals to endure and perpetrate acts of hazing, perpetuating a cycle of abuse. Peer pressure often forces those in authority to condone questionable behavior, making them reluctant to disrupt the status quo. Within sports teams and educational institutions, hazing can solidify into tradition, with former victims becoming perpetrators themselves, unwittingly perpetuating the harmful cycle.
"Tradition should never justify harm" Bonface Nyagah - BSc, MA, PMP? a safeguarding champion, always says. The real world does not condone hazing; it condemns it. Let's equip our youth with skills and values that empower, not degrade.
Joining a group should never entail surrendering dignity. Consent is not a blank check for abuse; it's a call to uphold integrity and respect.
In conclusion,
Break the silence hazing often goes unrecognized and unreported. Together, let us create a culture of inclusivity, respect, and accountability.

7 个月I wonder if after 50+ years of independence #Kenya need to have collaboration with #BritishArmy. Is this not #neocolonialism? And unfortunately they seem to get away with this #hazing vice.

7 个月Very distressing topic that never goes away. Just when we think that the healing process on the past evils will begin. Terrible.

7 个月This is sickening and I hope to follow on how this is resolved and systems that will be put in place to prevent this from recurring. I hope to know how survivors have been supported. Sexual abuse has deep negative impact which we may think as professionals we're successful in solving but truth is survivors live with that throughout their lives. Something in the future may return those bad feelings and trauma And we won't be there to support. At times projects will have ended etc Can we fight to have systems in place Yes people may breech but at least with systems in place. What systems were out on place which the army breeched. Disgusting behavior huh
