Labor Disputes on the Horizon
A U.S. East Coast port strike in January appears increasingly likely, and the potential duration remains a major concern for supply chains. Adding to the uncertainty, U.S. railroads could also face labor unrest, compounding logistical challenges for domestic freight movements.
Tariffs and Trade Wars
The U.S. is entering 2025 with trade conflicts on multiple fronts, creating a clouded outlook for supply chains. Will the new year finally see a meaningful shift in sourcing away from China, or will the status quo prevail? These decisions will have far-reaching implications for global trade.
The Push for U.S.-Built Ships
The "SHIPS for America Act," currently under consideration in Congress, could bring significant changes to the industry. If passed, it would encourage the construction of U.S.-built vessels, potentially reshaping parts of the ocean shipping landscape.
Escalating Global Tensions
The geopolitical landscape remains fraught with challenges. The Red Sea situation shows no signs of resolution, while tensions are escalating in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait. Spot rates are rising ahead of Chinese New Year and the looming U.S. port strike, creating questions about whether the market will reach overcapacity. With 2025 fleet growth estimated at around 5% (adding 150,000 TEUs) compared to 3% global GDP growth, rate stability could be at risk.
IMO Emissions Push and Rising Fuel Costs
The International Maritime Organization's push for greener shipping practices is likely to accelerate in 2025. While this marks progress for sustainability, it could also lead to substantially higher fuel costs, creating new challenges for carriers and shippers alike.

Red Sea and Fleet Dynamics
The situation in the Red Sea remains unchanged, with shipping lines continuing to bypass the Suez Canal in favor of navigating around Africa. This 10+ day diversion has absorbed much of the 10.6% fleet growth seen in 2024, making a resolution a top priority on the “BCO wishlist.”
Adding to the uncertainty, the industry is closely watching for potential congestion as new alliances transition to updated vessel rotations. All eyes are on MSC, which is moving toward operating its own global network with minimal vessel sharing agreements (VSAs).
