Shiny Object Syndrome in Private Practice
Gerda Muller
PRIVATE PRACTICE SUCCESS Founder & Consultant: Helping you build a Self-Running Practice, giving your more time, money and meaning.
I've got a question for you today.
A very important question.
Do you suffer from Shiny Object Syndrome?
In other words, do you get distracted by all the amazing things that you can see as opportunities for you and your business?
If so, know that you are not alone. I myself are a recovering Shiny Object Syndrome sufferer. I know that there's so many opportunities out there right now. You see them everywhere. I see them too. However, I think if we are honest with one another, we know that it's not helpful.
So what I want to do today is give you 3 things that you want to consider each time you notice a new shiny object.
Number 1, I want you to ask yourself, "This shiny new thing, this amazing idea, this great opportunity, is this aligned to my long term vision?"
You know, that place that you want to get to within your practice over the next 5, 10, 15, 20 years. If not, then I would say this is not an opportunity for you to pursue.
Number 2, is this shiny object aligned with your 12 month goals. You know, when you did your planning at the start of the year? Will this help you achieve your 12 month goals? If not, I would suggest letting it go.
Number 3, I want you to really look at what is the stuff that you are already working on. What projects did you identify? And if those projects are aligned to your 12 month goals and to your vision, then that's what you need to focus on, and you need to let the rest go.
I suspect it was Richard Branson who famously said, "Opportunities in businesses is like buses at a bus stop. There's always another one coming." So don't get caught up on FOMO, on the fear of missing out.

Instead, stay focused on what it is that you are here to do, and what it is that's aligned to where you want to be moving your business towards into the future.
As always, remember that I'm here to help you build a private practice you can't stop smiling about.
