Shining a light on turbidity compensation in online water quality measurement

Turbidity compensation of online measurements of organics and nitrate, easy right?
Unfortunately not.
Over the many years I have been working with online 'spectral sensors' which utilise the full UV-Vis spectrum for online water quality measurement, I have time and time again discussed turbidity compensation of measurements with end users within the water industry. The simple reality is that turbidity compensation for the likes of UV254, nitrate and colour measurement is not a topic most end users think about, but it's pretty critical to accurate measurement of these parameters in both flashy samples (such as rivers) and high suspended solids samples (such as wastewater).
Basically, the more turbidity or suspended solids in the sample, or if these are variable in a process, the more critical effective turbidity compensation is.
So recently, along with my s::can colleague in Vienna, Christoph Wagner , we aimed to write an article explaining what turbidity compensation is, how it works, and why non-spectral sensors using single wavelength reference measurements for turbidity compensation may struggle in certain applications or events.
The article below focuses primarily on UV254 measurement, but the principle applies to any measurement carried out online that utilises UV wavelengths for the measurement.
Feedback and comments welcome.
