Today, let’s explore the fascinating world of smart windows and their impact on building facades and interiors. What are Smart Windows?
Smart windows, also known as electrochromic windows, can change their light transmission properties based on external conditions or manual settings. They can turn from transparent to opaque, or filter out light to control heat and light entering a building. Remember mood rings? Mood rings and electrochromic windows both change color based on external factors but serve very different purposes.
How Do Smart Windows Work?
Smart windows use a special material that changes color when electricity is applied, a process known as electrochromism, which basically means "changing color with electricity." Mood rings, on the other hand, respond to changes in body temperature and are not always accurate.
The Layers of a Smart Window
A smart window is like a sandwich made up of different layers, each with its function:
Changing the Window’s Color
To initiate the tinting of a smart window, an electric current courses through the transparent conductive layers. This electrical impulse triggers the migration of ions from the ion storage layer across to the electrochromic layer. As these ions infuse into the electrochromic layer, they cause the color to change, effectively tinting the window. This tint serves as a barrier, attenuating the influx of sunlight.

To revert the window to its transparent state, the electric current is reversed, pulling the ions back to the ion storage layer and restoring clarity to the glass.
