Shifting Norms for Women and Girls
Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs
We believe in the power of communication to save lives, by enabling people to adopt healthy behaviors.
Message from Debora Freitas Lopez
I love that each March we take time as a nation and as an international community to honor women’s history. I love that my own 12-year-old daughter sees images of women who look like her who have made a difference in the lives of others. And I think about the many ways that CCP works to inspire the inclusion of women and girls to create a better world, demonstrating the value of women and girls by resisting outdated social norms that impede their health and well-being.
From helping to increase the demand and uptake of the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine to improving family planning and reproductive health knowledge sharing through the FP insight platform, CCP envisions more inclusive health systems that leverage the power of women as decision-makers in the care of themselves and their families. Working with public- and private-sector actors, we create opportunities for women to feel comfortable at work during their menstrual cycles and help to combat the chronic absenteeism of many women of childbearing age. We also work with communities and government authorities to fight gender-based violence.
Though encouraged by the strides we have all made in the push for gender equality, reproductive rights, and the end to violence and abuse against women, much more needs to be done. As champions in this movement, we need to broaden women’s abilities to make choices and increase their demand for and access to quality care – including providers who hear, see, and value them. At the same time, we must give greater agency to women with the most up-to-date, most relevant, and most trustworthy health information.
Please join us in our work to truly hear women and girls as they fight for better health, safer environments, and more peaceful lives.
