The Shifting Landscape of Security: From "Observe and Report" to "Observe and Respond

The security guard industry is in the midst of a paradigm shift, largely driven by a scarcity of police resources and an uptick in crime rates. The traditional "Observe and Report" approach is gradually giving way to a more active "Observe and Respond" model. In this evolving scenario, security guards are no longer just witnesses but active participants in maintaining public safety.

Titan Protection Leads the Charge

Titan Protection has always operated under an "Observe and Respond" framework, making us well-positioned for the industry's current pivot. Our focus on extensive training in use-of-force and de-escalation techniques sets us apart as the need for more engaged security services grows. Consumers are acknowledging the worth of this proactive model, willing to pay a premium for top-tier services.

The Insurance Quagmire

While the market is ripe for this shift, challenges persist. One of the biggest hurdles is the reluctance of insurance carriers to defend against nuisance claims. Plaintiff attorneys are quick to exploit this, filing suits in the hopes of an easy settlement. In the current political environment, claims related to race or use-of-force become hot-button issues, often leading to settlements regardless of their merit.

Hesitation Among Security Companies

This lack of support from insurance carriers creates a ripple effect: security guard companies are hesitant to fully embrace the "Observe and Respond" model without assurance that they'll be backed when responding to incidents. Until there's a commitment to evaluate claims based on their actual merit, companies will be cautious about diving into this more engaged role.

The Path Forward

The future of the "Observe and Respond" model hinges on the willingness of insurance providers to stand firm against meritless claims. Doing so would not only foster a stronger security industry but also offer communities the kind of effective protection they're increasingly seeking—and are willing to pay for. As the market evolves, the question remains: Will insurance companies rise to the occasion, enabling companies like Titan Protection and others to meet this critical public safety need?

Unless better training is mandatory I don’t see that happening. It’s not safe for improperly trained security officers to respond. Plus the liability factor for businesses is at risk.
